Altaf’s arrest a legal matter: Nawaz



 












ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the arrest of Altaf Hussain was a legal matter and the government was extending its “legal and moral assistance” in this regard.
The premier chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the situation arising after the arrest of MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London and the overall law and order situation in the country.The prime minister told the meeting that Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad had assured him that law and order would be maintained in Karachi.

The meeting also reviewed the state of the economy with particular reference to the new federal budget. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar briefed those present on different aspects of the budgetary proposals.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar briefed the meeting on the government’s strategy to maintain law and order in Karachi. He said that the federal government would extend cooperation to the Sindh government to maintain peace in the city.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Raja Zafarul Haq, Interior Minster Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sardar Mehtab Abbasi attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said MQM chief Altaf Hussain was a Pakistani citizen and the government would provide all possible legal assistance to him.According to an official spokesman, the prime minister and interior minister had a telephonic conversations with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and enquired after Altaf Hussain. He also prayed for the early recovery of the MQM chief and asked the governor to keep him informed about developments in Altaf Hussain’s case.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar said the federal government would remain in touch with the Sindh governor regarding the case.Moreover, the Pakistani High Commission in London has asked for access to the MQM chief. According to the Foreign Office, the Pakistan High Commission contacted the British authorities in view of the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
