Saudi to mark Ramzan from Sunday: TV

RIYADH: Ramzan, the holy month of fasting, will begin on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, the state-run Al-Ekhbariya television channel reported on Friday.

Citing the authorities, it said that because the crescent moon was unable to be seen with the naked eye on Friday, Ramazan would begin on Sunday.

According to tradition, it is the sighting with the naked eye of the new moon that signals the start of Ramzan.

Other Gulf monarchies, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also said Ramzan will start in their countries on Sunday.

Cyclone Nanauk to hit Oman coast on Sunday

ISLAMABAD: Tropical cyclone Nanauk is expected to hit Oman’s coast in the next few days.

Going by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center s given name of 02A, the cyclone is currently lingering in the Arabian Sea with an estimated speed of 70 to 90kmph, Arab News reported.

According to the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, by Wednesday afternoon the tropical cyclone was some 960km southeast of the Masirah Island of Oman.

It would move and intensify further in the center of Arabian Sea on June 12 and 13, said the center.

The storm, Oman’s Met Office said is expected to move northwestward and make landfall in Oman between Ras Al Hadd and Ras Madrakah on June 15. Nanauk will intensify further in the center of the Arabian Sea but it is expected to weaken before approaching the coast of Oman. With wind speed reaching 30 35 knots per hour the storm is expected to bring in 100-300mm rainfall in 24 hours all over the Sultanate, a senior Omani official said, adding the height of the sea waves may reach four meters.

The impact of cyclone is expected from Saturday to Monday. Heavy rains and high speed winds are expected to lash North and South Sharqiyah Al Wusta and Muscat governorates. The rapid intensification of the storm was expected given the conducive environment at the sea as well as in the atmosphere.
