Texas General Hospital awards scholarships to five students

DALLAS : The Texas General Hospital of Grand Prairie hosted a ceremony where scholarships were awarded to five students with outstanding performances in medical field.

Arlington Texas resident Raheel Akhtar Khanzada was awarded a five thousand dollar scholarship in recognition of his academic excellence and community services.

A special ceremony was held at the hospital where hospital Owner & Chairman Board of Directors Dr Hassan Hashmi, President & CEO Salman Hashmi and its board members Chief Operating Officer Syed Usman, Vice President of Operations Faraz Hashmi, Chief Financial Officer Julie Stimmel, Chief Nursing Officer Brandi Ciufi and an Administrator , Bernnie Kennedy attended the ceremony; Dr. Hasan Hashmi presented a five thousand dollar’s scholarship check to Raheel Khanzada.

Talking to participants, Dr. Hasan Hashmi said that Texas General Hospital will keep encouraging students with high scholastic achievements in the medical field and will do everything possible in helping the youth in their educational pursuit.

He said that students residing in and around Grand Prairie are the future leaders of our society.

He said that Texas General Hospital is preparing community welfare programs where we are looking into as how best we can serve our communities.

The award recipient Raheel Khanzada said that he wants to pursue the medical career. He thanked the Hospital leaders for their encouragement as this scholarship will be a great contribution to his tuitions at UTA for his pre-med degree.

PSA holds its 5th Annual Banquet in University of Texas

DALLAS: The Pakistani Students Association (PSA) at University of Texas in Dallas held their largest event "PSA 5th Annual Banquet" at their campus on April 19.

The highly successful event gathered people from all walks of life and ages in the DFW area towards the mutual goal of promoting Pakistani culture.

The night was filled with musical and dance performances, delicious Pakistani food, designer and bridal fashion shows, Mr & Ms PSA Awards, and the opportunity to socialize with fellow countrymen.

The goal of PSA is to unite all of the University of Texas at Dallas through exciting events by raising awareness about our beautiful country and its traditional values. Every semester, they hold several events with a focus to bring unity amongst students and the Dallas community by organizing cultural, social, and entertainment events.

More than 200 students, professionals and community members, both with Pakistani origins and non-Pakistani graced the occasion with their presence.

The evening was also highlighted by a superb performance by Sohail Najmi, the Pakistani ghazal maestro, who volunteered his talent for the event. PSA officers Hassan Allahrakha and Hira Ahmed paid tribute to the heroes of Pakistan so that our new generations remember their services and sacrifices.

They talked about the lives of the founder of the Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Fatima Jinnah, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Abdus Salam, Abdul Qadeer Khan, Raziuddin Siddiqui and Hakim Saeed.

The event was made possible by active support from the Pakistan Society of North Texas (PSNT) officials Anjum Anwar and Salman Tabani, who attended the event to show that the Pakistani Students Association and the Pakistani community in Dallas-Fortworth area share a common goal and that they are ready to work together in achieving it.

The PSA Vice President Muhammad Muneeb Saleem stressed on the need for scholarships to facilitate higher education for international students from Pakistan at the University of Texas at Dallas to which the PSNT officers gave a very positive response.

Dr Amer Suleman represented Pakistan American Association of Texas (PAAT) as its President and encouraged the PSA officers to continue to organize such events.

The President of PSA Muhammad Ali expressed deep gratitude in his speech to the Pakistani community of North Texas for helping sponsor the event which brought together everyone to celebrate our mutual heritage and traditions.

On behalf of PSA, he thanked the fashion show sponsors, local media partners, and the performers who volunteered their time to make the show a huge success.

Marquez defends Texas title in MotoGP

 

AUSTIN: Marc Marquez made the Grand Prix of the Americas look like a breezy Sunday ride. The reigning MotoGP world champion from Spain cruised to his second win of the season, defending his title in the race where he claimed his first career victory.

And the 21-year-old did it with ease, starting from pole position and leading the entire way. "I never lead a race from the first lap to the end," Marquez said of his eighth career win overall. "It was a little strange."

It certainly wasn´t in doubt.Marquez avoided any trouble in the traffic of the elevated first turn and he soon created a huge gap ahead of his Repsol Honda teammate and countryman Dani Pedrosa as the Hondas ripped through the track´s long straightaways and blasted out of the hairpin turns.

Unlike his season-opening victory in Qatar, when Marquez edged Valentino Rossi by 0.259 seconds, he had a nearly 3-second lead midway through the race and was never challenged. "Marc today was just faster," said Pedrosa, who finished second to Marquez for the second straight year and was more than 4 seconds behind Sunday. "I couldn´t really follow the pace."

No one could. Ducati´s Andrea Dovizioso of Italy was third, nearly 21 seconds behind Marquez, to earn his first podium finish since 2012. Pedrosa had said the only hope of beating Marquez was to overtake him at the start.

Last year, Pedrosa outmaneuvered Marquez on the first turn — a 130-foot climb into a downhill left — and held the lead for 12 laps. This time, Marquez started in front and stayed there — once Jorge Lorenzo got out of the way.

Lorenzo, who started fifth, jumped the start and was penalized with a pit lane ride through at the end of the first lap. Once Lorenzo was forced off the front, the race settled into a Marquez pleasure ride. "My first thought was that, ´I lost on the start,´" Marquez said. "But then I understood when he went on the first lap into the pits. I was concentrated on my race. It didn´t change anything."

Marquez´ only trouble came on a wobbly final turn on the last lap when he nearly dumped the bike on its side before recovering without any problems for the finish.

Even though he´s a world champion, Marquez chalked it up to inexperience. "The race was too quiet... I just wanted to put some RPM on the bike," he said. "It was a small mistake... It´s more experience for the future."

Marquez showed no signs of any lingering problems from a right leg fracture that happened in preseason training. Marquez had said the leg was getting stronger every day but that he would take pain killers for the race "just in case."

Sunday was the first of two races in the U.S. this year, with MotoGP back in Indianapolis in August. The series now moves to Argentina in two weeks before a six-race run in Europe.

With Marquez in control of the chase for the world championship, getting out of the U.S. may help level the playing field. Marquez has never lost on American soil, winning all six times he´s raced in MotoGP or the development levels. "I don´t know why it´s a great country for me," Marquez said. "I like it, so I will ask for a couple more races here next year." (AP)
