Chinese men catch baby falling from building

BEIJING: Dramatic images of two Chinese men catching a young child after he fell from a second storey window were released on Friday by Chinese state media.

A man walking past a building during a thunderstorm in the southern province of Guangdong spotted a baby who had climbed dangerously onto the window sill, provincial broadcaster Guangdong TV said.

In the video footage he was joined by another bystander, and both threw up their arms in anticipation of the child´s fall. Finally the infant tumbled down into the pair´s arms.

Some reports on the incident Sunday have said he was a one-year-old looking for his mother.

"I didn´t think too much at the time. I was just afraid of failing to catch him," local media quoted the first man, surnamed Li, as saying.

The video has created a storm on social media worldwide, with thousands posting comments.

"Wow... that is what I call nice catch! That guy is a hero!" wrote one YouTube user. (AFP)

Baby among five killed in British house fire

LONDON: A nine-week-old baby girl and two children aged seven and nine were among five people killed in a house fire in Britain on Monday.

Anum Parvaiz, 54, and her 20-year-old daughter Shabina Begum were named as the two adults killed in the blaze in Sheffield, northern England.

"It´s a tragedy beyond description," said Parvaiz´s cousin Ishfaq Hussain Kayani.

He said a nine-week-old baby girl was among those who had died, as well as nine-year-old Adhyan Nazim and seven-year-old Amaan Nazim.

"It´s so sad. A couple of hours ago the whole family was leading their normal life," he said.

"Just in a matter of minutes the whole family has been destroyed. The whole family has gone."

The local fire service confirmed that two adult females and three young children had died in the blaze.

"An investigation has commenced, involving police and fire officers, to establish the cause of the fire," the service said.

Baby safe after crawling across busy US street

BRIGHAM CITY: Police say a baby found crawling across a busy four-lane street in the U.S. after his 7-year-old sister took him out of his crib is safely back home.

The driver who rescued the 1-year-old boy Friday evening returned him to his mother and called police in Brigham City, Utah.

The unidentified mother told police she was resting and had put the infant in a crib to sleep.

Police say her daughter took the baby out to play and he somehow got out of the backyard.

They say the baby crawled less than a block when he was found in the lane closest to the sidewalk.

Police say charges are unlikely, but the case has been turned over to the Division of Child and Family Services. (AP)

India: Pakistani couple in trouble with newborn baby

NEW DELHI: The newborn baby has become an offense for Pakistani couple in India as the Indian authorities stopped them at Munabao railway station over document row.

Mai Fatima and her husband Mir Muhammad --- residents of Ghotki in Pakistan --- had gone India two-and-a-half months back to meet Fatima's aging father.

Their visa was originally for one-and-a-half months but was later extended by another month when Fatima's father suddenly passed away. Fatima had come to India she was seven months pregnant and on April 14 she gave birth to a baby boy at a private hospital.

Indian local municipal council had issued a birth certificate in the name of Sohail Khan. When the couple along with the newborn left for Pakistan via the Thar Express they were stopped at Munabao railway station.

The Indian authorities stopped the couple and asked them to get the relevant documents (passport or visa) from Pakistani High Commission in India.

The immigration officers asked them to either go back to Pakistan leaving the child behind or complete the documentation of their baby.

Baby taken into hiding after attempted murder charge

LAHORE: Relatives of a nine-month old baby charged with attempted murder in Pakistan have taken him into hiding, one said on Tuesday.

Baby Musa Khan appeared in court in the city of Lahore last week, charged with attempted murder along with his father and grandfather after a mob protesting against gas cuts and price increases stoned police and gas company workers trying to collect overdue bills.


"Police are vindictive. Now they are trying to settle the issue on personal grounds, that's why I sent my grandson to Faisalabad for protection," the baby's grandfather, Muhammad Yasin, told Reuters.

The baby is on bail and due to appear at the next hearing on April 12 but Yasin said he was not sure if he would take him to court for the case.

"There is immense pressure on me from various corners," he said.

At his first appearance in court last week, Musa cried while his fingerprints were taken by a court official. Later, the baby sucked on a bottle of milk and tried to grab journalists' microphones as his grandfather spoke to the media.

"He does not even know how to pick up his milk bottle properly, how can he stone the police?" Yasin asked journalists at the court last Thursday.

The baby was apparently charged because an assistant sub-inspector complained in a crime report that Musa's whole family beaten him up and injured his head.

The provincial law minister, Rana Sanaullah Khan, told Reuters that the provincial chief minister had ordered an investigation into the charges against Musa. One policeman had been suspended, he said.

"He has directed police authorities to take action against the officials who booked the infant," he said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's baby girl born in Gurgaon hospital

 

President Hamid Karzai made a brief visit to Gurgaon to meet his wife and newborn daughter at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute.

GURGAON: Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai made a brief visit to Gurgaon on Wednesday to meet his wife and newborn daughter at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute.

The child was born on Tuesday morning. "The baby girl was born around 9.30 am on Tuesday. Both the mother and her baby daughter are doing quite well," Afghanistan's ambassador to India, Shaida Mohammad Abdali, said in an emailed response to TOI.

Abdali said the president paid a very short visit to the hospital during his brief transit stay in New Delhi before going to Colombo on Wednesday. "Both the president and the first lady enjoyed a few moments together with their newly born baby-daughter," the ambassador added in his email.

There was no official statement from the hospital. Sources said Karzai's wife was admitted to the hospital earlier this week. She was accompanied by her family members and relatives. The sources said Karzai stayed with the family for around 20 minutes. The first lady is likely to be discharged by Friday evening, the sources added.

On choosing Gurgaon as the place for the delivery of their third child, Abdali said, "The president's two other beautiful children were born in Afghanistan. In this case, however, due to some predictable medical complication, the specialized doctor in Afghanistan advised that the baby be delivered in India given the availability of specialized medical facilities and personnel."

Abdali thanked New Delhi for its support. "We're thankful to the hospital's excellent medical staff for their superb services, as well as to the hospital's management team. And we're grateful to the Indian government for their continued support with everything, including facilitating the hospitalization process."
