Militant infighting kills 17 in Iraq’s Kirkuk

KIRKUK: Militants who fought together to capture swathes of Iraqi territory have turned their weapons on each other during clashes in Kirkuk province that cost 17 lives, sources said Saturday.

The fighting erupted on Friday evening between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Army of the Men of the Naqshbandiyah Order (JRTN) in Hawija, in Kirkuk province, said the sources.

There were differing accounts as to what sparked the firefight, which is a potential sign of the fraying of the Sunni insurgent alliance that has overrun vast stretches of territory north of Baghdad in less than two weeks.

One security official said JRTN fighters had refused an ISIL demand to give up their weapons and pledge allegiance to the jihadist force.

Witnesses, however, told the two sides clashed over who would take over multiple fuel tankers in the area.

Analysts have noted that while the insurgents, who are led by ISIL but also include a litany of other groups including loyalists of now-executed dictator Saddam Hussein, have formed a wide alliance, it is unclear if the broader grouping can hold together given their disparate ideologies.

ISIL espouses an extremist interpretation of Islam and wants to establish an Islamic state, whereas other armed groups have political differences with the regime in Baghdad, suggesting the alliance could eventually break down.

"If history repeats itself, then ISIL, because it´s got a transnational goal of a caliphate, because it´s radical, because it´s got this ludicrously absurd... approach to Islam, they can´t help but break that coalition," said Toby Dodge, head of the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics.

ISIL, which is seen as the most capable militant group in Iraq, has for months clashed with groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad in neighbouring Syria, where it also operates and where it is seen as far more extremist than even Al-Qaeda´s front group in the country.

60 terrorists killed as warplanes pound militant hideouts in NWA

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Air Force warplanes bombarded militant hideouts in country’s northwestern tribal, killing 60 terrorists including foreign fighters.

According to an ISPR statement, 30 terrorists were also injured.

Sources said that the PAF jets pounded the suspected hideouts in Mir Ali and other areas of North Waziristan tribal region.

They said that some foreigners were also killed in the air strikes. Pakistan has engaged The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella of more than 30 militant organizations, in talks in a bid to put an end to home grown insurgency.

However, there has been little progress in peace process as the TTP saw raging infighting in South Waziristan between two groups of the militant organization headed by Khan Said Sajna and Sheryar Mehsud.

23 killed as jets pound militant hideouts in Khyber Agency

PESHAWAR: Pakistani fighter jets pounded suspected militant hideouts in Khyber Agency near the Afghan border on Thursday killing twenty-three extremists and injuring several others, Geo News reported on Thursday.

The operation comes despite efforts by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government to engage the Taliban in talks to end years of fighting with an insurgency seeking to topple the democratically elected government in the capital Islamabad.

"Terrorist hideouts were engaged by fighter jets in Khyber agency early (in the) morning today," the army's press wing said in a text message sent to media.

Nine militants’ compounds were also destroyed during bombing by the fighter jets.

It said it was a response to a number of recent attacks against police and civilians in Islamabad and Peshawar.

A senior military official in Peshawar said the operation, which started early on Thursday, was still under way.

"After the jets, Pakistan army ground forces also launched operations in the area," he said.

Last week the Pakistani Taliban - a loose alliance of militant groups separate from but allied to the Afghan Taliban - formally ended a 40-day ceasefire but attempts to resume talks have continued nonetheless.

Representatives of both sides met in Islamabad on Wednesday, agreeing to pave the way for the next round of negotiations aimed at finding a compromise that would convince the Taliban to lay down their weapons.

Abducted Iran border guards freed by militant group

TEHRAN: A semi-official Iranian news agency is reporting that an al-Qaida-affiliated militant group Jaish al-Adl operating in a lawless frontier area along the Pakistan-Iran border has released Iranian border guards abducted two months ago.

Friday´s report by the Fars news agency quotes an unnamed official as saying the guards were handed over to Iranian officials in Pakistan. It did not elaborate.

According to Pakistan's Interior Ministry sources this was Iran's internal matter and the guards were released as a part of Tehran's prisoner swap with Jais al-Adl.

In February, the Jaish al-Adl group abducted five Iranian guards outside Sarbaz, a town in Iran´s restive Sistan-Baluchistan province near the border with Pakistan. The guards were reportedly taken to Pakistan.

A local official said last month that one of those abducted was killed. Also in March, Iran´s President Hassan Rouhani phoned Pakistan´s Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif asking for "serious action" to free the guards.
