Kamran Khan said that now the government is forming a committee which will hold direct talks with the Taliban. He said that it is a matter of huge importance that the Army’s representative are included in the government talks committee or a nominee of the Army is included in the committee.
Kamran Khan said that it is the wish of the two committees as well as the government that if direct talks are held with the Taliban then those who hold the talks should also include a representative of the Army. This is a very sensitive matter. The Army has been at the forefront in the war on terror, and around 4,000 soldiers have embraced martyrdom in this war. Now asking the Army to enter into direct talks with the Taliban is not a simple thing because the Taliban have directly claimed responsibility for hundreds of attacks on the people and the Army of Pakistan. To be talking directly to those people is a sensitive matter for the Army.
Kamran Khan said that routine corps commanders’ conference is going to take up for discussion extraordinary matters. The conference is also important because it is not simply a matter of talks with the Taliban because sooner or later the stage will come when the Taliban will put forth their demands which will require taking some very hard decisions.
Going by Maulana Samiul Haq’s statement, one thing is clear that the Taliban will demand release of all prisoners, payment of compensation and Army’s withdrawal.Former director-general of ISPR, Athar Abbas, said in the programme that the Army is an institution of the State, and it had held direct talks with the Taliban in the past and made agreements with them. However, during those talks the then army chief was also the political chief. But now it is a different situation altogether. Agreements and talks are political matters, and thus it is the responsibility of the political leadership to step forward and take control of the situation. It is not the job of the army leadership to hold talks. Talks should be held between the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the government.
Responding to a question, Major General (R) Athar Abbas said that the situation in Afghanistan is very different from that in Pakistan. There is a resistance movement in Afghanistan against a foreign power. The Afghans want to rid their country of the foreign elements. On the other hand the government in Pakistan is a government that came to power through a constitutional and democratic process. There are Constitution and law in this State, and the State institutions are functioning. The government cannot be changed at gunpoint, nor is anyone allowed to enforce a Sharia of his choice through the barrel of a gun.
Kamran Khan said no matter what the situation is, the morale of our nation never tumbles. We have seen how our cricket heroes made India and Bangladesh bite the dust.Trade and commercial matters are generally considered to be quite sensitive, but despite the incidents of terrorism, the country’s economy has not shown any sign of defeat, rather it is getting better. Our traders have decided that whether its war or talks, they will hold their grounds. And perhaps that is the reason why the value of rupee against the dollar is getting better. For the first time, the dollar is losing against the rupee.
Kamran Khan said that the government and the opposition have decided on Justice (R) Rana Bhagwandas becoming the next chief election commissioner.
Faisal Chaudhry, a member of the legal team of General (R) Pervez Musharraf, while commenting on the appeal filed at the Supreme Court by Pervez Musharraf, said that when the Special Court had observed in this case that it would be tried under the Criminal Procedure Code, we objected over it, but the Registrar’s Office raised an objection that this is not a public interest case. Now we have filed an appeal against the objection by the registrar’s office. In the appeal we have argued that the Registrar’s Office does not have the authority to raise objections over the legal merit of the case. The Registrar’s Office’s authority is administrative only.
Kamran Khan said that everyone knows that the hearts of the Kashmiri Muslims beat with the hearts of their Pakistani brethren. An incident on Sunday has further endorsed this fact. The cricket match between Pakistan and India was being watched by Kashmiri Muslim students and Hindu students at the university of Meerut, and when Pakistan won the match the Kashmiri Muslim students cheered loudly and started celebrating Pakistan’s victory. In retaliation, the Kashmiri students were manhandled, and a case of sedition was registered against them. The occupied Jammu and Kashmir reacted over this high-handedness, and due to the reaction the UP government was forced to withdraw the case.
