US not leaving Afghanistan, says Olson

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson has made it clear that the United States is not leaving Afghanistan but it is drawing down in Afghanistan.

“The impression that the United States is leaving Afghanistan isn’t correct,” he said. The US ambassador in a brief chat with The News here at the residence of the British High Commissioner Philip Barton Tuesday evening said that had the outgoing president of Afghanistan concluded the bilateral security agreement (BSA), it would have been better proposition.

Olson who served in Afghanistan as the US ambassador before coming to Pakistan said that all the candidates for the presidential slot and political parties contesting elections are committed to ink the BSA. The BSA will provide several concessions to the troops staying back in Afghanistan.

The ambassador was of the view that the holding of the elections in Afghanistan is a great victory of the people of Afghanistan who have inflicted defeat upon the Taliban. It has broken the myth of Taliban. The polls have established that Afghanistan has a bright democratic future, he added.
