Dr Arsalan announces open global tender for Reko Diq

DUBAI: The son of the ex-chief justice of Pakistan, now at the centre of a huge controversy over his appointment, says the multi-billion dollar Reko Diq gold mines will be awarded through an open global tender to the highest bidder.
Dr Arsalan Iftikhar Chaudhry, now vice chairman of the Balochistan Board of Investment, told me in a telephone talk that his father came to know about his new job through the media but then asked him to serve the people with full responsibility.

He dismissed the conspiracy theories about his appointment to sell multi-billion dollars gold mine Reko Diq through a backdoor deal as rubbish.“I would ensure that Reko Diq was given through an international tender, with maximum transparency, to ensure the rights of the Balochistan people,” he stated categorically several times during the talk.

PTI leader Imran Khan had stated at a huge rally in Bahawalpur that Arsalan was appointed VC of the BOI to repay ex-chief justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry for his complicity in rigging the 2013 elections in favour of Nawaz Sharif.

In an upbeat mood and dismissing his critics as just politicians playing politics, Arsalan emphasised repeatedly that neither Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, nor his sons or anyone in the federal government had any role in his appointment.

“I am a Baloch and now my fourth generation lives in this province. I have a right to serve it. The federal government has nothing to do with my appointment. The CM has said on the floor of the house that it was his personal decision. He is an honourable, clean and a nationalist person. He wanted to bring a team which could do something and deliver for the province.”

Arsalan revealed that he had in the past two years brought investments of millions of dollars into Balochistan. “Since 2007, I have been doing my independent business and I am an entrepreneur, everything is my own, my business, social life, everything is my own thing. I have contacts with people in Balochistan from my childhood and we have been living here for four generations now. My father came to know about this through the media. He knew nothing but when he heard it the only thing he told me was that I have a heavy responsibility and I will have to serve the people in any capacity.”

Asked wheter this meant his father had approved of the appointment, he said: “He never interferes in my matters, He never approves or disapproves anything concerning my matters. He has kept it like this. Neither I will interfere in his matters and nor he will do so in my matters.”

Asked about Reko Diq and how would he respond to criticism that he, Dr Malik, Hasil Bizenjo, the PM’s family and some old ousted companies had ganged up to give Reko Diq to them through a deal, Dr Arsalan said: “I laugh at political leaders who say things and make allegations on hearsay. In BOI our work is to channelise things. There are other opportunities and projects in Balochistan. We are there to project it and then put up to the govt, cabinet and provincial assembly. Our job is limited. Whatever project it is, we will ensure transparency and interests of the people of Balochistan. We will not compromise that in any case, come what may. We have been stopping corruption. To expect anything out of the way for anyone would be wrong. Whatever will be in the interest of the people, for their good, we will do. No favourtism will be done.”

Dr Arsalan has already made plans for the road forward. “Our first presentation to the chief minister will be given soon and we will place two core things before the CM. First will be the law and order and security for investors and the second would be complete transparency in projects, including Reko Diq.

“Before starting anything, we will hold external audits, from 2010 to-date. Every year an external audit by international companies will be done. It will be as crystal clear as a glass.”

On Reko Diq, Dr Arsalan is very clear. “It would be an international open tender. That’s how it should be done. The best bid and the option should be accepted. It would be open for all and advertised in international magazines, newspapers. We will see what the people get and the major share comes to the locals”.

“And let me tell you the father I represent, I can assure that with me around nothing like a backdoor deal is possible. The way forward will be given in a presentation within a week or 10 days as everyone was busy in the budget. The way forward will be opened to the public.”

MQM announces mourning day today

KARACHI: Deputy Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has said that the MQM will a stage a peaceful protest on Friday against ‘repression, barbarism and the continued extrajudicial murders’ of its workers.

He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at Nine Zero on Thursday after the recovery of four bodies believed to be of MQM workers. He urged people to remain calm and composed. He assured the public that the ‘day of mourning’ would be peaceful. He appealed to traders, businessmen, industrialists, transporters and citizens to support their protest.

Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of the brutal killings of MQM workers. He deplored that negotiations were being carried with the people who had challenged the state but the sons of the people who had founded Pakistan were being killed.

He deplored that the MQM’s four innocent workers had been murdered that day. He condemned their ‘extrajudicial’ murders.Dr. Khalid Maqbool alleged that terrorist activities were being carried out in Karachi and innocent people were suffering because of terrorism.

Deputy Convener Nasir Jamal, Dr. Farooq Sattar, Senator Nasreen Jalil, Kanwar Naveed Jameel and other elected representatives and Rabita Committee members were present during the press conference.

“MQM and our people are rulers, law enforcement agencies and human rights organizations that our workers are being kidnapped and killed daily. Despite our repeated appeals their arrests were not shown in the record. We have been receiving dead bodies of our workers. Today, we found the bodies of four workers who were killed and their bodies were dumped on the road. We are worried about our workers who have become victims of enforced disappearance. We have filed petitions for the recovery of our workers. We did not get justice there. No one paid to our applications. People of the city are sad today because of the brutal murders. People have started closing their shops, bazaars and transporters have taken their vehicles off the road, “ Dr. Khalid Maqbool said.

Dr. Khalid Maqbool has appealed to people of Sindh to support MQM’s ‘Day of Mourning’ by keeping their business closed. He has made an appeal to prime minister, federal interior minister, chief minister and governor of Sindh to take notice of extrajudicial killings and help in the recovery of detained workers. He warned if the killings continued ceaselessly things would get out of control.

Altaf Hussain demands action against killers

The founder and leader of MQM, Altaf Hussain has strongly condemned the extrajudicial murders of MQM’s four workers Muhammad Sameed, Ali Haider, Faisal and Salman Qureshi. These were affiliated with MQM’s Mayammar and Gulshan-e- Iqbal sectors.

“We have repeatedly raised voice over the raids, abductions and torture on MQM workers carried out by the death squads of police and other law enforcement agencies. Workers are being abducted and subjected to torture and executed in cold blood and their mutilated bodies were dumped on roads. We have tried the get the attention of our rulers on the serious and grave situation. However, they turned a deaf ear to our pleas and protests and they did not take notice of the killings. Judiciary also did not take any suo moto action on the killings. The situation has embolden these killers and they are carrying out extrajudicial murders with impunity. Last night, we found the tortured bodies of MQM’s four workers in Memon Goth, who were arrested few days ago, “ Mr. Hussain said this in a statement issued from London.

Hussain has expressed condemnation of the brutal murders of four workers and termed it barbarism and brutality. He said that people with kind heart could not remain silent on the murders. He added that this barbarism and cruelty has greatly shocked and aggrieved me. He prayed that God would punish the killers of his workers. He added that he could understand the feelings and emotions of his workers and people. He urged them to remain calm and composed and observe a day of morning in a peaceful manner.

Addressing the police and law enforcement personnel, Hussain said that they should not invite the wrath of Allah by killing citizens of their country.

Hussain has demanded an action against the law enforcement personnel who are killing MQM workers extra judicially and not presenting them in courts after arrest. He demanded that the president, prime minister, federal interior minister and army chief should arrest the personnel responsible and prosecute them.

He prayed to Allah to give the martyred workers high place in Jannah and strength to families to bear the loss.

Tension across city

Following the four slain men being identified as MQM workers, tension gripped the entire city, where armed men forced all business activities to close.

A large number of MQM leaders and activists reached the Edhi Morgue near Sohrab Goth to pick up the bodies of the slain party workers, during which passing vehicles were pelted with stones.

A heavy contingent of police and Rangers personnel reached the troubled area, where teargas shelling and aerial firing were employed to disperse the protesters.

Vehicles set ablaze

A bus and a motorcycle rickshaw were torched by miscreants as an apparent show of mourning over the killings of MQM workers.

A bus bearing registration No JB-0303 was set ablaze near Bismillah Chowk in Landhi No 6. The vehicle was completely destroyed by the time fire engines could reach the scene. Moreover, a Qingqi rickshaw was torched near Dastagir Society in Federal B Area.

70 suspects arrested

Police arrested around 70 suspects, including two in an injured condition, after exchange of fire when the accused were forcing businesses to close in different parts of the city.

Two suspects identified as Tariq Nawab and Rashid Hameed were arrested by the Defence police after they opened fire on the law enforcers. Police said the accused were forcing shopkeepers to close their businesses in Defence Phase II Extension.

Police of different districts and zones arrested dozens of suspects who were forcing shopkeepers to close their businesses.

Police and Rangers personnel have been put on high alert after the MQM made the announcement of observing a day of mourning.

According to Karachi Police Chief Shahid Hayat, the police and Rangers have prepared a coordinated plan to maintain law and order in the city on Friday, Geo News reported.

Hayat said the police and Rangers would conduct raids and patrol the city. He vowed that no one would be allowed to disrupt the peace of the city, harm any lives or damage any property.

Committee formed to probe into MQM activists’ deaths

Meanwhile, Karachi Police Chief Shahid Hayat has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate into the killings of four men whose bodies were found in Memon Goth on Wednesday and who were identified on Thursday as Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activists who had been missing for the past several days.

The order for the inquiry came from Sindh police chief Iqbal Mehmood after MQM leaders claimed that the four men, who had been shot dead in execution style, belonged to their party. They were identified as Sameed, Ali Haider, Faizan and Salman Qureshi.

DIG East Munir Sheikh will head the inquiry committee. Other members include SSP SIU Farooq Awan, SSP Malir Rao Anwar and SSP Investigation Dr Syed Abbas Rizvi.

Saudi announces 11 new MERS infections

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Wednesday announced 11 new cases of MERS, including a 13-year-old child, as its acting health minister vowed to keep the public better informed about the coronavirus.

The new cases bring to 272 the total number of MERS infections, including 81 deaths, registered across the kingdom -- worst hit by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome which was first detected in eastern Saudi Arabia in September 2012.

Most of the latest cases are in Riyadh and the commercial hub Jeddah, with one case in the holy city Makka, visited each year by millions of pilgrims from around the world.

Three of the new infections were of health workers, while a 13-year-old Saudi girl is among cases recorded in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah.

A spike in MERS cases and public fears prompted the Gulf state to dismiss its health minister, Abdullah al-Rabiah, on Monday without an official explanation.

Rabiah last week visited hospitals in Jeddah to calm a public hit by panic over the spread of the virus among medical staff that triggered the temporary closure of the city´s King Fahd Hospital emergency room.

Labour Minister Adel Fakieh, who has taken over as acting health minister, said on Twitter late Tuesday that he had visited the Jeddah hospital.

Fakieh promised "transparency and to promptly provide the media and society with the information needed" on the virus.

At least four doctors at King Fahd Hospital reportedly resigned last week after refusing to treat MERS patients.

The virus is considered a deadlier but less-transmissible cousin of the SARS virus which erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Experts are still struggling to understand MERS, for which there is no known vaccine.

A recent study said the virus has been "extraordinarily common" in camels for at least 20 years, and it may have been passed directly from the animals to humans.

The World Health Organisation said it had been informed of 253 laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS infection worldwide, of which 93 had been fatal.

The WHO in a statement issued in Cairo on Wednesday expressed concern about the rising number of cases, especially in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Its Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office said it has offered to help Saudi Arabia and the UAE investigate the current outbreaks "in order to determine the transmission chain of this recent cluster". (AFP)

TTP announces not to extend ceasefire

PESHAWAR: The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced that the 40-day long ceasefire will not be extended.

In a statement TTP spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid said the government did not give a satisfactory response to the Taliban’s 40-day ceasefire and 50 of their detained members were killed during this period.

The TTP spokesman said the decision to not extend the ceasefire was taken by the Taliban shura. Shahidullah Shahid added if the government takes any serious step, the TTP will respond.

According to Shahidullah Shahid the dialogue process with the government would continue.

The TTP had declared a month-long ceasefire on March 1, 2014 during the dialogue process with the government. Later the ceasefire was extended for ten days which expired on April 10, 2014.

Speaking to Geo News Taliban Committee member, Professor Ibrahim said the decision to not extend the ceasefire would not impact the dialogue process. "We will continue our efforts in trying to extend the ceasefire."

Professor Ibrahim said reservations of the TTP had been communicated to the government.

Senior Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir said Taliban are skeptical of the government’s seriousness in holding talks and they accused secret agencies of creating rifts among the TTP ranks.

He said Taliban leaders saw hidden hands of Pakistan’s security agencies in recent deadly clashes between the Sheheryar Mehsud and Khan Said Sajna groups of the terror outfit.

“Taliban say government agencies tried to install Khan Said Sajna as TTP chief after the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud,” Hamir Mir told Geo News.

He said that the Taliban were also unhappy over government’s unwillingness to free their prisoners.

Delhi Jama Masjid Imam announces support for Congress

New Delhi: One of the India's most important religious Muslim leaders has announced his support for the Congress.

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi, said today, "We had discussions with Sonia Gandhi. For elections 2014, I announce support for the Congress, with the rider that they will fulfill their promises if they come to power. We have to stand united against communal forces."

The religious leader accused Uttar Pradesh rivals Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of opportunistic politics.

"The Samajwadi Party failed to protect Muslims," he said, referring to the September Muzaffarnagar riots in which nearly 60 people were killed and thousands driven out of their villages. The BSP, he added, had failed to convince him that it would not join hands with the BJP after the polls.

Imam Bukhari's meeting with Sonia Gandhi has been described by the BJP as an attempt by the Congress president to polarize the vote by religion. The BJP has registered its complaint with the Election Commission because Mrs Gandhi reportedly asked the Shahi Imam and other Muslim leaders accompanying him to ensure the minority vote in India is not split.

"This is an attempt to polarise voters. The Election Commission should take note," the BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad said, reacting to the imam's declaration.

Yesterday, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi attacked Mrs Gandhi for "open communalism"; today, another senior BJP leader, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, reiterated that charge. "Sonia Gandhi calls us communal and makes a deal with Imam Bukhari" said Mr Chauhan, who is the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

Sonia Gandhi denied the charge, telling reporters, "We are not in the habit or in the game of polarising the elections."

The Election Commission had said if a complaint is filed, it would examine the issue and "further action would be taken."

Nokia Announces X, X+ and XL Android Phones

Nokia X feat Nokia Announces X, X+ and XL Android Phones
So you love Windows Phone, Android and Asha but can’t seem to decide which one to buy on a budget? Nokia has now solved your problem.
Rumours were right. We have been hearing about Nokia’s Android phones for years now but it is only now that they’re official. The three phones under the ‘X’ banner, the X, X+ and XL all run on open-source Android project version 4.1.2. This is an approach similar to the one used by Amazon for its Kindle tablets.
Nokia said that major apps will be available at launch for the Nokia X family of devices, including Facebook, LINE Free Voice and Messages, LINE Camera, LINE Bubble, Picsart, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Real Football 2014, Skype, Spotify, Swiftkey, Twitter, Viber, Vine and WeChat, among others.
Moreover, a first for Nokia customers around the world, BBM will also be available on the Nokia X family of devices in addition to Windows Phone.
It’s quite remarkable that the company has announced three phones, since all the leaks indicated a single, starter-range model.
Nokia Experience with Microsoft Services and Google’s Apps
The OS comes with a Windows Phone-like looks on its interface. The phone comes pre-loaded with Microsoft’s services like Skype and Outlook, as well as other applications such as Facebook.
Google has been deliberately side-lined from the entire experience.
Why Android then? That’s because of the apps, of course. Buyers will be able to side-load any Android APK on the phone, not just games and apps but also launchers.
Nokia’s Fastlane is also built-in into the phone’s interface. In case you don’t know, it gives you a track of everything going on in the background and your history.
Based on from what we’ve seen, the interface isn’t too smooth, which might’ve been due to the fact that the OS running is Android Jelly Bean, rather than the newer, more customized Android.

Nokia X and X+

The first phones of the line-up are the X and X+. Both are virtually the same, except that the latter has more internal, and expandable storage.
The design of the phones is undeniably Asha-inspired. Those vivid colours and replaceable backs clearly indicate the price-point and the target audience. Dual-sim connectivity further clarifies that.
The front is adorned with a 4″ display with 800 x 480 resolution. Below the display, you get a sole capacitive key, which takes you to the last screen on a single tap, or the home screen on a longer one.
Under the hood, you get a 1Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor, along with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. The X+ will have expandable memory and 768 MB RAM. At the back is a sole 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera.
The phones are also quite compact, being 1 cm thick and weighing 129g, meaning they’ll fit in your palm quite comfortably. The 1,500 mAh battery will allow up to 10.3 hours of 3G talk time.
The price of the Nokia X and X+ are 89 Euros (12,800 PKR) and 99 Euros (14,200 PKR) respectively.
As expected, the phone will be released only in developing markets such as Asia including Pakistan, Nokia has told, in Q2.

Nokia XL

The XL is certainly a phone we weren’t expecting. It is the top-end smartphone which also runs on forked Android 4.1.2 but sits one slot above the Nokia X+, in the territory of the Lumia 520.
Coming with a substantially larger 5″ display with the same WVGA resolution, the Nokia XL features the same capacitive key at the bottom of the display.
Under the hood, you get the same 1Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 4 GB internal storage but 768 MB RAM this time. At the back lies a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED Flash, along with a 2 megapixel camera at the front.
The phone will hit emerging markets in Q2 of this year for 109 Euros or about 15,700 PKR.
With the X series, Nokia is giving its fan-base yet another option to join the family. Whether it will be successful remains a matter of debate and we can’t say anything for sure until we’ve tried it out for ourselves.
Here are specs for Nokia X Series Smartphones:
