Punjab CM shows law minister the door

LAHORE: After an announcement from Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday evening, Punjab Minister for Law and Local Government Rana Sanaullah Khan resigned from the cabinet, while Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Dr Tauqir Shah was also removed in the wake of the Model Town incident.
Shahbaz Sharif, during a press conference on Friday evening, claimed that steps had been taken to fulfil the norms of justice. Shahbaz said Rana Sanaullah was his close friend and had rendered invaluable services for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He said when there was a martial law in the country, Rana Sana was in jail. Similarly, he added, Dr Tauqir was like his younger brother and he had been performing his duty honestly and devotedly for the last 15 years. After Rana Sana’s resignation, Education Minister Rana Mashood has been given the additional charge of law and local government departments.

The Punjab chief minister said tough decisions had to be taken for upholding the norms of law and justice as he considered himself answerable to Almighty Allah, the people and history. Shahbaz said he had full confidence in high court and ifapplication in the Supreme Court for the change of judicial commission. He said if the SC took suo moto notice of the incident, even then he had no objection.

Shahbaz said he was grieved at the tragic incident and, to fulfil requirements of justice, he had formed a judicial commission. He said the case registered against sons of Tahirul Qadri was withdrawn the same night. He said with the blessings of Allah Almighty, he survived a deadly disease like cancer and returned to the country and started serving masses. He said his six years’ tenure as Khadim-e-Aala Punjab was before the people. Shahbaz said he was the person who served the affected people round-the-clock during flood and other natural calamities. He said he always helped the oppressed whether cruelty was committed against girls in Sahiwal or in Muzaffargarh and spared no effort to take to task the powerful and cruel people.

The CM said those doing politics of dead bodies were levelling allegations against him that God forbid he was involved in the murder of the innocent people. He said when 42 people were killed in Karachi in 2007, those shedding crocodile’s tears and “Shaikh-e-Haram were celebrating Jashan with those waving fist in Islamabad”. He asked where those people were at that time who were now talking about justice and demanding resignations. Shahbaz said his past stood witness to the fact that he never compromised on justice and reiterated that he would not take rest till justice was provided in the Lahore incident. He said orders had been issued for immediate arrest of those who opened fire on innocent citizens and all-out steps would be taken to uphold the norms of justice. He said he would not compromise nor allow any hindrance in the way to justice.

Shahbaz said the day was very unfortunate for him when he put behind the bars his own son-in-law with handcuffs. He said God forbid such a time came to even an enemy. He said he was not praising himself but giving an example so that no one should raise a finger at him and those criticising him should know about his character. Shahbaz said he wanted that only doing justice was not enough but it should be seen being done so.

Replying to questions of journalists, the CM said he was not taking a defensive position and he had no concern with the demands of Shaikh-e-Haram. He said when the country was passing through difficult times and he was going to every nook and cranny of the province including Rahim Yar Khan, DG Khan and Muzaffargarh to help the people, those enjoying cool breeze and recreational foreign trips were saying that he was doing jugglery. The CM said by the grace of Almighty Allah the south Punjab gave the PML-N the biggest mandate of the history of the country, which was a proof of the fact that Allah Almighty did not waste services and hard work of any one.

Shahbaz said they decided to send a delegation comprising ministers to Minhajul Quran for expressing condolences, but they refused to receive. The CM said he was Khadim of the people and he was deeply shocked over the loss of precious human lives. If Minhajul Quran authorities permitted, he was ready to go there for offering Fateha. He said the people of Punjab were like his family members and those who died in the incident were his own people and he fully realised the grief of the heirs of the deceased. He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, federal and Punjab governments and the entire nation equally shared the grief of the bereaved families.

Shahbaz said maintenance of law and order was the responsibility of the government and it would discharge its responsibility efficiently. The CM said Nandipur power project was completed within a record period of seven months and Chinese also termed it a miracle. He said those not aware of the miseries of the poor people of Balochistan, KP, Sindh and Punjab must know that a number of programmes had been launched for reducing sufferings of the people. “Is stopping energy projects a service to Pakistani nation?” he asked.

Sheep genome shows links between wool, health: study

WASHINGTON: Scientists have mapped the entire genome of sheep, paving the way to improve the health of the humble farm animal for better meat and wool.

After eight years of work on the entire genetic makeup of the species, the researchers also found the secrets of the sheep´s digestive system and unique fat metabolism process that allows it to produce and maintain its thick coat.

Sheep became a species distinct from goats and other ruminants about four million years ago, with a four-compartmented stomach that can convert rich plant materials into animal protein, according to the study.

That digestive feature allows sheep to easily feed on a diet of low-quality grass and other plants.

The study published in the journal Science was the culmination of a project involving 26 institutions from eight countries that is part of the International Sheep Genomics Consortium.

Researchers hope their findings will help develop DNA tests to improve stock through accelerated breeding selection programs, and to further research to mitigate diseases affecting the animals.

"Given the importance of wool production, we focused on which genes were likely to be involved in producing wool," said Brian Dalrymple, project leader at Australia´s national science agency the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.

"We identified a new pathway for the metabolism of lipid in sheep skin, which may play a role in both the development of wool and in the efficient production of wool grease (lanolin)."

There are about a billion sheep around the world -- including around 70 million in Australia alone. So the researchers predicted their work could have a "massive impact" for the rural economy due to the sheep service as a significant source of meat, milk and wool products.

Researchers from Australia, Britain, China, France, Denmark and New Zealand participated in the study. (AFP)

Sturridge shows worth as England sink Peru

LONDON: England will head to the Americas with optimism intact after overcoming Peru 3-0 in their final pre-World Cup friendly game on home soil at Wembley Stadium on Friday.

In the first of his side´s three warm-up matches, manager Roy Hodgson saw man-of-the-match Daniel Sturridge put England ahead with a sweet 20-yard strike midway through the first half.

Centre-backs Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka got on the scoresheet in the second period to complete a straightforward evening for England, who travel to Miami for a pre-tournament training camp on Sunday.

They will face Ecuador and Honduras there next week before opening their World Cup campaign against Group D rivals Italy in the Brazilian city of Manaus on June 14. "It was a wonderful send-off to the World Cup by a quite incredible crowd," Hodgson told ITV. "We had to be patient, but we were dominant throughout. It is the perfect end to a perfect two weeks. I am delighted that 85,000 fans came here to wish us well on our way. When you play against teams with 10 men behind the ball you have to be patient, but I had no doubt we would win."

Hodgson was also able to hand a debut to young Everton defender John Stones, while he will have drawn encouragement from the performance of Adam Lallana and a late cameo from the fit-again Jack Wilshere.

Defeat took Peru´s run of games without victory to seven, but new coach Pablo Bengoechea had selected an experimental squad shorn of big-name players such as Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan. "We were playing against a top side, who were saying goodbye to their fans before the World Cup," said Bengoechea. "They had more possession than us and we struggled to get it off them, but in the first half they didn´t hurt us."

Hodgson opted to select Danny Welbeck instead of in-form Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, with the Manchester United man lining up on the left flank in a conventional 4-2-3-1 system.

It was the teams´ first meeting since 1962 and Peru threatened first, with Joe Hart leaping to field a deflected shot from Montpellier youngster Jean Reza, but England cranked into gear in the last 20 minutes of the first half.

Having wastefully lashed wide with his weaker right foot following a buccaneering run from Lallana, Sturridge made amends in the 32nd minute with an excellent strike that took his international goal tally to four.

After collecting a throw-in from Glen Johnson wide on the England right, he worked his way inside two defenders to the edge of the box before whipping a glorious left-foot shot into the top-left corner.

Cahill headed in from a Leighton Baines corner in the 65th minute to give England breathing space.

Five minutes later Jagielka stabbed home the third goal after visiting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez allowed another Baines corner to squirm from his grasp.

Sterling, Wilshere, Chris Smalling, James Milner, Ross Barkley and Stones all entered the fray in the latter stages, while the avoidance of injuries completed a satisfactory evening for Hodgson. (AFP)

Reference to Pemra shows on which side govt stands: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Friday that by sending the reference to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), it had become clear on whose side the government was standing. He said that they always helped the Jang and Geo TV in the time of distress.

Ch Nisar categorically stated that the media trial of armed forces, including the ISI and army, was not acceptable.Talking to newsmen informally here on Friday, he said that no one should misunderstand the government’s stance towards the defence institutions, as it was bound by the law and Constitution to preserve their honour and dignity.

Chaudhry Nisar said the federal government was cooperating with the Sindh Police in its probe into the attack on Hamid Mir but it was unfortunate to see that instead of cooperating in the investigation, a media trial was going on.

He said that Geo and Jang, under the pretext of the attack on Hamid Mir, was playing the roles of the complainant, police, prosecutor and judge themselves. The Indian and the Western media maligned Pakistan after the coverage of Geo, Nisar said and added that the attack on Hamid Mir would be investigated and taken to its logical end.

He said Hamid Mir should have given his statement to the investigation agencies instead of Aamir Mir.He blamed the Islamabad Police for not inquiring into the matter but he didn’t provide any phone number or information to the police, the interior minister added. —Online

APP adds: Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said it was a constitutional and legal obligation of the government to protect the honour of the armed forces and security and intelligence agencies.

Chaudhry Nisar said the government strongly condemned the attack on Hamid Mir and expressed sympathy with his family. He said as an interior minister, it was his responsibility to bring to justice the culprits involved in the Hamid Mir incident.

The minister said it was also his responsibility to ensure that the dignity of defence institutions was safeguarded. He said that the federal government had also set up a three-member judicial commission that would prepare its report within 21 days. The commission would hand over the report to the government, which would make it public, he added.

Chaudhry Nisar said in the statement given by Hamid Mir it was also stated that the Islamabad Police did not take action on his complaint on a threatening phone call received by him. “I ordered an inquiry into it last evening and according to police, Hamid Mir had not provided any telephone number to the police,” he said.

About the incident of planting a bomb underneath the car of Hamid Mir, he said the police arrested the driver of Hamid Mir but he was later released after the TTP accepted responsibility.

Chaudhry Nisar said the media trial should be stopped as it creates misunderstanding. After the attack on Hamid Mir, the ISPR condemned the incident and called for the formation of a commission to hold a probe into it, he added.

The minister said that the government, opposition and security institutions agreed that culprits should be brought to book and without an inquiry and evidence, a media trial should not be carried out, as the enemies would benefit from it.

He said India and the United States had launched huge propaganda in the wake of the incident adding an independent media was the need of Pakistan, however, dignified security institutions were also imperative for the country.

The minister said they should step back, take a deep breath and control the situation. He said that he tried in the past and even now he was trying to cool down the matter, adding he always continued his struggle for an independent media and would always oppose a ban on any media organisation.

He appealed to all sides to show patience and stop the media trial.Chaudhry Nisar said the issue of statement given by the Taliban to malign the top intelligence agency over the Hamid Mir incident was taken up by him with the Taliban nominated committee. He protested to them as, on the one side, a dialogue was being held and on the other side, they were maligning the agency. He said all the intelligence and security agencies were coordinating in the investigation of Hamid Mir incident.

With awards, Bollywood shows growing imprint in US

WASHINGTON: Bollywood this week throws its premier awards event for the first time in the United States, which has quietly become the leading overseas market for India´s prolific film industry.

The International Indian Film Academy on Wednesday kicks off four days of festivities in Tampa culminating in an awards ceremony Saturday that will bring out Bollywood´s glitterati and Hollywood legend John Travolta.

While Bollywood is known for its extravagant song-and-dance routines, its expansion into the United States has been more understated. Indian films are increasingly shown in mainstream US cinemas which set aside specific screens and times.

The United States has topped Britain in recent years as the largest overseas market for Bollywood, fueled by demand from the three million-strong Indian American community and the growing ease of distributing movies through the digital format.

"Dhoom 3," the latest installment of a thriller series which is nominated for best picture at the Tampa awards, broke US records for Indian cinema after it was released last year. Set largely in Chicago, "Dhoom 3" grossed more than $8 million in the United States and Canada, roughly on par with "Before Midnight," the second sequel to the US romantic classic "Before Sunrise."

Indian cinema´s growth can easily fly beneath the radar in the United States, which has by far the world´s largest box office and is thoroughly dominated by domestic fare. India, in turn, has the largest output of films at more than 1,100 a year.

But Gitesh Pandya, a US-based consultant for Bollywood studios, said that Indian cinema had innate advantages as it has a consistent audience of Indian Americans who are often well-educated and generally do not need expensive promotional campaigns to woo them to the movies.

Indian films that just five years ago would have opened at 80 to 85 screens in the United States now start in more than 200 theaters including in smaller cities where cinemas are happy to fill seats however they can, Pandya said.

"It´s incredible growth. Theaters that five years ago would never think about playing one of these movies are now anxious to get the latest Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan movie," Pandya said, referring to two stars whose films are considered relatively high-brow in Bollywood.

CPJ shows concerns over ISI move against Geo TV

NEW YORK: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is greatly concerned over actions brought by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Directorate against Geo Television.

In its complaint to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), the ISI accused Geo’s parent company, the Independent Media Corporation, of conducting a “false and scandalous campaign undermining the integrity and tarnishing the image of state institution (ISI) and its officers.”

The media regulator has the authority to shut down broadcasters based on such complaints, and has done so under previous administrations in Pakistan.

“We call on the Pemra not to act on this spurious complaint, and we call on Pakistan’s security services to recognise the critical role of the media and exercise tolerance and maturity,” said Bob Dietz, CPJ’s Asia programme coordinator. “The ISI is free to rebut allegations in the media but should not try to censor coverage.”

Tension between Pakistan’s military and intelligence communities and much of the media swiftly escalated following an assassination attempt on Geo TV anchor Hamid Mir on April 19. Mir was hit with six rounds from assailants on motorcycles as his car was travelling between Karachi’s airport and the centre of the city. Mir was severely wounded and is recovering in the hospital. Geo TV has broadcast accusations that the ISI was involved in the murder attempt.
