Scotland Yard confirms Imran Farooq’s killers in Pakistan custody

LONDON: For the first time, detectives at Scotland Yard investigating the murder of Dr Imran Farooq confirmed on Monday that they were looking for two Pakistani men named Mohsin Ali Syed and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran in relation to the assassination of former MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq.

The Scotland Yard detectives released the details of the two men “in a bid to get the help of the public” to resolve the case of Dr Imran Farooq’s killing here on Green Lane, Edgware, on 16 September 2010.

“The two men wanted in connection with the murder are: Moshin Ali Syed, 29 (15/05/85) a Pakistani national who was in the UK between February 2010 and 16 September 2010 and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran, 34 (6/7/79) a Pakistani national who was in the UK between early September 2010 and 16 September 2010.”

Security observers believe that the two men were snatched at the Karachi airport by spy agencies as they landed on a flight from Sri Lanka where they had flown from London after killing the former MQM convener, who was estranged with the party at the time of his killing.

The police said the investigation team knows that the two men resided in the Stanmore area prior to the murder and left the UK on the evening of the murder. “The men are known to have registered to study at a college in East London having entered the UK on student visas.”

A note issued by the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) said that the police were determined to find the two men.The Scotland Yard said that it had received a lot of information that has been helpful to “build up a significant picture of the men’s movements, both in Pakistan and London” but officers would like more information to complete the picture.

The police said that Dr Farooq’s murder would have required careful planning and help from other people, some of whom may have provided assistance or information unwittingly. The police appealed: “We are appealing to anyone who has not yet come forward but knew either man in Pakistan or during their time in the UK to contact the investigation team. In particular, officers are keen to piece together the men’s movements in the days immediately prior to the murder and their travel out of the UK on 16 September 2010. The two men are believed to be in Pakistan at this time and officers continue to liaise with Pakistani authorities.”

Anyone who can assist should call the police incident room on +44 (0)20 7230 2717 or contact the police by email at SO15Mailbox-.DrFarooqMurder@met.police.uk (This is the correct email address).

A 52-year-old man arrested in June 2013, on suspicion of conspiracy to murder at Heathrow, after landing at the airport on a flight from Canada remains on police bail pending further enquiries.
