The Standing Committee of Senate for Interior approved amendments to the
Pakistan Protection Ordinance (PPO) on Wednesday.
The meeting of the Senate committee was presided over by Senator Talha Mehmood in the National Assembly building. The committee unanimously approved the Protection of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill-2014 under which the authority to shoot a miscreant or suspected person will rest with the officers of Grade-15 and above.
Senator Zahid Hamid, briefing the committee, said that necessary measures had been taken to check the misuse of authority such as the affected person could approach the high court against the sentence of the special court. He said the bill would remain in force for two years initially. Every effort had been made in the bill to avoid the misuse of power.
Pervaiz Rashid, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, said that the person who would violate the law would be held accountable.“Incidents such as the Model Town take place in several countries frequently. The matter will be cleared when the joint investigation will be completed,” he said.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had insisted that the shooting power should be given to Grade-17 and above officers only.It was also decided in the meeting that Grade-15 officers would be empowered under the law to issue orders for shooting.
