What AI revealed was earlier censored by Jang Group

ISLAMABAD: The Jang Group was not publishing my stories for the last many days giving full details with evidence that Pakistan Army officials working for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) were directly, and in some cases indirectly, contacting cable operators and pressurising them to put the Geo News and other Geo channels off air without waiting for the decision of the constitutional governmentNow my exclusive stories are wasted, as an independent and credible international body, Amnesty International has come up with its report disclosing most of these facts.
I always wondered as to why Geo and Jang Group was not carrying my stories about ISI’s role in challenging the writ of the government and in shutting down Geo TV despite the fact that Geo channels were being blacked out across the country and Group was being badly pressed — one of the worst attacks on freedom of expression and independence of media following General Musharraf’s November 2007 Geo-specific censorship during which Geo News remained off air for 72 days.

This has been a basic principle across the world that intelligence agencies work under cover. But, during course of our investigative journalism, we easily tracked down the ISI networks, which, instead of working to ensure national security, were busy taming street cable operators to disturb Geo channels, and later close them. They were even found involved in incidents of kidnapping and torture, and evidence of such acts are present. Severe threats were being hurled at cable operators and others concerned to ensure that Geo remains blocked. All these facts were being reported but Jang Group’s top editorial management remained hell bent not to publish factual stories being filed with evidence and versions.

While Amnesty report came on scene on May 30, the investigative reporting to this fact that media is being badly censored and pressurised in Pakistan by the powerful institution of ISI were being filed since April 30. However, the Group continued to censor the stories in the name of national interest, while the Constitution, liberty of citizens, basic human rights, right of access to information, right to freedom of expression and independence of media were being compromised.

Not only involvement of the ISI officials in the instances of controlling cable operators, in some cases regular army officers, came on scene but also army vehicles were used to pressure the officials of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), the regulatory body of electronic media.

It didn’t stop here. Two of Pemra private members, who are active against Geo, were in constant contact with intelligence agency officers. PPP leaders say that lawyer of ISI Babar Awan got Israr Abbasi inducted as member Pemra during the PPP government and now he remains in touch with the intelligence agency. He himself admitted that his initial so-called 13-pages fact finding report was prepared by officials of the intelligence agency.

Any highest level probe can check call records of these members, cable operators and officials to verify some of the facts. However, most the stories filed were stopped or edited in a way that name of the ISI was deleted or edited and people remain deprived of the facts.

Even the federal government was repeatedly asked to take action against officials of the intelligence agency and stop them from interacting with the cable operators or Pemra officials directly, as, in this way, writ of the government was being challenged. However, a weak prime minister and a weak government remained unmoved and silent and never initiated any action against the ISI officers or Pemra officers involved, and thus compromised its own writ. In latest events government officials are being attacked and tortured. A senior federal minister himself told this correspondent that a senior government official was kidnapped and later badly tortured. However, so far no action has been taken and despite having a democratically elected heavy mandated government, Pakistani citizens and media is being harassed by a state institution, and there is no one to help.

Imran Khan must preach what he practices

ISLAMABAD: As the PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Friday waged a war against Geo TV and the Jang Group that are already under fire from the ‘patriotic’ forces, the argument he advanced to justify the boycott does not hold any ground and rather cast doubts on his integrity.
His flip-flop in the post-Hamid Mir attack testifies that he has either been surrounded by confusion or by the ‘angels’, thus vindicating his friend Ch Nisar who had credited now-former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Pasha for the sudden rise of the PTI in 2011.

Initially, Imran demanded apology from Geo TV for ‘its baseless vilification of the Pakistan Army and ISI.” A new reality dawned on him later on. He found out the network’s involvement in the election rigging while admitting he did not have any evidence; nevertheless, asked for apology on this ground and his party would boycott unless the needful was done.

He was wrong before; he is wrong again. I have a few questions for him followed by the answers.Does he really believe that alleging a spy chief for a murderous attempt is tantamount to the vilification of the entire agency? If the answer is in affirmative then the PTI chief had set this precedent in 2007 and must tender apology for doing so before demanding from others.

On June 15, 2007, the PTI Secretary General, Air Marshal (R) Zulfiqar held a press conference (details can still be accessed at PTI’s official website). “Intelligence agencies have devised a plan to kill Imran Khan,” he told media and said that the FIR would be registered against the agencies’ chiefs together with President Pervez Musharraf and MQM chief Altaf Hussain “in case of any attack.”

One wonders that if the PTI chief had different standard for himself and anybody else feeling threatened from the agencies? He should have publicly submitted apology before advising demanding this from others.

Likewise, he misquoted former Army Chief Gen (R) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani about the briefing he gave during All Parties Conference (APC) meeting about terrorism and military operation in Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata). It was a breach of trust to publicise (correctly or incorrectly) a secret shared with top leaders during an in camera briefing to begin with. Also the fact remains that the government termed it wrong attribution to the former army chief, clarifying what Kayani had exactly said. The Senate also demanded of the PTI chief to take back his words, but he remained adamant. He did not admit his mistake at any point; however, he never spared a chance to preach others.

His allegations of rigging don’t make any sense either. While indicting Geo TV on this ground and announcing boycott till the apology is tendered, the PTI chairman admitted that he did not have any proof to state about its involvement.

The foundation of his argument about rigging rested on the airing of victory speech of Mian Nawaz Sharif by Geo TV. This ‘offered’ him strong evidence about its involvement. Regardless the merit of his allegations, this established the fact that he is an avid watcher of Geo TV. Had he been watching other channels by that time, he would have found out that this speech was not exclusively being run by Geo TV.

Supposing that he was watching Geo TV only, why did he fail to notice the appearance of his top lieutenant, Asad Umar, in Kamran Khan Show short after the PML-N leader’s victory speech? Not only he had congratulated Sharif brothers on the victory; he had also disclosed PTI’s win in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Going by Imran Khan’s logic, did PTI rig the elections in KP? If not, how did the party’s top campaign manager Asad Umar come to know about the victory in KP?

Geo TV had also been alleged of giving more projection to the PML-N during election campaign. This was in contrast with the complaint lodged by Ishaq Dar of the PML-N to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the unfair coverage of Geo TV that, the PML-N thought, was heavily biased in favour of PTI. Even many journalists affiliated with the eJang Group noticed disproportionate coverage to the PTI by Geo TV. The PTI instead of being thankful has turned against the same network.

As the election campaign was in the full swing, different TV anchors were predicting the win of PTI. As a journalist, I was curious as to why those anchors were so convinced about the likely victory of the PTI. Upon inquiry, a couple of them said that Imran Khan had given in writing to many anchors that PTI would grab 125 national assembly seats. One wonders how did the PTI chief know and what made him so confident? I would also be grateful to the anchors who were receiving calls from the angels updating them about the election situation and that PTI was going to win with huge margin. As they would use different code names for different politicians, one of them was ‘doctor’. Will any anchor let the public know who was named as ‘doctor’?

Kushal Tandon: Gauhar Khan and I are doing what couples who are in love do

Kushal Tandon: Gauhar Khan and I are doing what couples who are in love do

The Bigg Boss 7 love stories are surviving and going strong even outside the glass-walled house

While Tanishaa Mukherji and boyfriend Armaan Kohli are busy painting the town red with their public display of affection, how could competing couple from Bigg Boss house Kushal Tandon and Gauhar Khan be far behind. Armaan-Tanishaa are ready to get hitched, while Kushal-Gauhar have been going steady even after the competition and had participated in another TV reality show Khatron Khiladi 5, the couple walked out after Ajaz Khan was roped in this show. And with Amraan declaring Tanishaa as ‘marriage material’, how could Mr Tandon be far behind. In a recent interview he said,
“We are going strong. We are exploring each other. I am happy, she is happy. We lead normal lives and are doing what couples who are in love do.”
Looks like the love birds wanna take time before they take it forward like  Armaan and Tanishaa. In fact, we’re sure with competing couple taking the centre stage at events and dos, Kushal and Gauhar‘s love story almost seems pheeka at least right now. And we wonder if KT’s statement was just to make clear that the fizz is their is still very much there.

What Is The Best Non-Prescription Eyelash Enhancer?

Eyelash enhancers are the latest beauty trend these days, and cosmetic companies everywhere are launching products that promise to give women longer, fuller, and darker lashes without the fuss of mascara or false lashes.  But, with all these options, it’s hard to know what really works and what doesn’t.

Luckily, there are reputable beauty sites out there that have put many of these eyelash enhancers to the test.  The results for this year’s top-performing eyelash enhancers are in … with SmartLash coming in with a solid 5-star rating on DermStore.com, the #1 online destination for skin care and beauty.
What Is Eyelash Enhancement?
If you aren’t yet aware of this increasingly popular method of achieving longer lashes, eyelash enhancers are formulas that are topically applied to the base of your lower and upper lashes.  They can even be used on sparse, thin eyebrows.
Is It Safe?
While prescription eyelash enhancers are often formulated with prostaglandin, a hormone that can cause side effects such as darkened irises (potentially irreversible) and blurred vision, more and more companies are developing safer, non-prescription alternatives that deliver impressive results.
Most non-prescription formulas are hormone and paraben-free.  Instead, they’re formulated with polypeptides, amino acids, and conditioning ingredients to help rejuvenate lashes and strengthen them against breakage.  So, you still get longer, fuller, darker-looking lashes and shapelier brows, without the negative side effects.
How Soon Can You See Results?
In some cases, users have reported seeing results in as little as seven days, while others may see results in four weeks.
SmartLash, for instance, has published its clinical results, which show that 46 percent of participants saw a difference in their eyelashes and/or brows in just seven days, while 100 percent saw a difference in 14 days.
Read the Reviews
You can read reviews on SmartLash and see what real customers are saying about it on DermStore.com.  And, right now, SmartLash is being offered at a highly discounted rate of 76 percent off, only on DermStore.com.

What to expect from Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyamev Jayate 2′

Aamir Khan
'Satyamev Jayate 2' will address issues like education of girl child, and farmers' problems, among others.

In the first season of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ Bollywood actor and philanthropist Aamir Khan touched upon sensitive issues in India like female foeticide, child sexual abuse, dowry related issues, Khap Panchayat, among others.
The issues were aptly addressed in the show and now Aamir Khan is back with the second season of the show which unnerved India like never before.
According to reports the season’s first episode is dedicated to Dasrath Manjhi, who single-handedly carved out a road by cutting through a hill in Bihar. His son Bhagirath Manjhi and daughter-in-law Basanti Devi are living in abject poverty in Dasrathnagar and now hope that Aamir Khan will tell the world the real story of their lives through ‘Satyamev Jayate’
Other issues that Aamir Khan may address in the second season of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is about the growing farmer suicides.
aamirfarmers
The official Twitter handle of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ posted, “They are the backbone of our nation! Do we appreciate the efforts of the Indian farmer?” It further posted, “Kisaan ki unnati, Desh ki pragati.” The growing rate of farmer suicides in India is indeed a cause to worry about and looks like Aamir Khan is all set to raise awareness on the issue.
The first season of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ touched on innumerable topics related to the women of the country and it seems, this time too Aamir Khan will touch on such topics.
aamir-2
This time around Aamir Khan is likely to talk about education for girls. The show’s Twiter handle posted, “Educate a woman, Build a nation.”
aamir-4
Another pressing issue of the time is the youth of India. Even in the promos of the show Aamir Khan has emphasised on the importance of youth and as ‘Satyamev Jayate’ tweeted, “Together with the YOUth, we can bring a RevolYOUtion!” they further tweeted, “They are the nation’s future! What is your contribution to ensure they have a better tomorrow?”
aamir-1
Looks like Aamir Khan has a lot to say this time and this time he expects his audience to really ponder on the subjects he is about to discuss.
satyamevjayate-1
The first episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is set for telecast on March 2 and will telecasted for five consecutive Sundays and will then return after a break.

What Putin really wants with Crimea

Simferopol 02 28 2013
Now that Russia has carried out a de facto invasion of Crimea, it’s worth looking at recent history to help understand Moscow’s motivations and what it wants.
Not that the Kremlin necessarily sees what it’s doing as an invasion. When Soviet troops occupied Afghanistan in 1979 after killing the president, Moscow treated the operation almost as an afterthought aimed at shoring up a coup d’etat it thought would be resolved within days or weeks.
Just as Soviet troops wore Afghan army uniforms 25 years ago, the removal of insignia from the uniforms of the soldiers now in Crimea is meant to confuse the outside world about who’s behind the incursion.
So was the Kremlin’s statement on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered his government to continue talks with Ukraine on economic and trade relations and consult the International Monetary Fund and the G8 on financial aid.
The movement of Russian armored personnel carriers, helicopter gunships and troops into Crimea — where gunmen have seized parliament, government buildings and strategic infrastructure like airports and the local telecom provider — belies the Kremlin’s denial it’s carrying out a coup.
More from GlobalPost: This is what it looked like when Russian military rolled through Crimea (VIDEO)
Violating the sovereignty of an independent country would seem to go against the principle Russia upholds as most sacred in its foreign policy. Nevertheless, Moscow is taking advantage of Ukraine’s weak new leaders — whom many Russian officials have denounced as illegitimate — acting according to a very basic pattern carried out many times since the Soviet collapse.
Time and again, Moscow has welcomed instability in another former Soviet republic — when not actually fomenting it — in order to exert influence there by appearing to be a peacemaker or beneficent sponsor.
That’s how the Kremlin controls the breakaway pro-Moscow region of Transnistria, an impoverished sliver of Moldova that erupted in a brutal civil conflict in 1992. With its so-called peacekeepers still stationed there, Russia uses its influence over the territory to pressure the Moldovan authorities.
In 2008, Russia invaded Georgia to firm its hold over that country’s two pro-Russia separatist provinces, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which the Kremlin recognized as independent soon after.
Those areas have become “frozen conflict” zones — isolated from the world, locked in cycles of poverty that makes dependence on Russia the only immediate way to survive.
In Ukraine, having lost the struggle last week to save the presidency of his ally, the former Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych — in what Moscow characterizes as an illegal takeover by violent nationalists — Putin is now grabbing Crimea to show Russia can do the same. Taking over Crimea would have the added benefit of relieving Moscow of the need to lease the port of Sevastopol to house the Russian navy’s Black Sea Fleet.
It’s all being done in the name of protecting Russian citizens — the parliament in Moscow just made it easier to give Ukrainians Russian citizenship — and may end up creating another Russian exclave.
Nevertheless, Putin has previously shown that he responds to obstacles by backtracking, having built his power base at home as well as his aggressive foreign policy by taking risks and gauging the response. Faced with a backlash, he has reversed himself in the past.
Russia’s success in Georgia — where the 2008 invasion followed actions similar to the ones Moscow is taking now, such as staging military exercises on its southern border — showed Putin Western countries will do virtually nothing to help their allies in former Soviet territory.
More from GlobalPost: These are the ways Russia exerts control over its neighbors
Part of the reason Europe and the United States have been caught off guard by Putin in Crimea, as they have been elsewhere so many times recently, is that they tend to assume he makes decisions in his country’s interests, like his Western counterparts. That’s not the case. Putin makes decisions that are in his interests: Threatening to direct nuclear missiles at Western Europe, for example, is bad for Russia’s image abroad, but at home it shows Putin to be tough.
Of course a secure, independent, successful Ukraine would benefit Russia greatly by providing a strong ally and trade partner. That’s not what Putin wants, and his actions in Ukraine are posing the West its biggest challenge since he invaded Georgia.
He has helped push Ukraine, the country on Russia's southern border, to the verge of civil war by pressuring the president to abandon a deal with the European Union while warning the West not to meddle. Surely that’s not in Russia’s interests, but it is in Putin’s: He wants Ukraine to join a so-called Eurasian Union, an organization whose main purpose would be to oppose Western alliances.
Putin’s overriding goal is to obstruct the West. Like his Soviet models, he believes that to be feared and loathed means to be respected. Still, Western countries still hope Moscow will cooperate on Syria, Iran — and now Ukraine — even though doing so plays right into the Kremlin’s hands.
That’s why the best hope of rolling back Russia’s intervention in Crimea now rests on firmness about the consequences. If Western countries are to uphold their values and interests, they must show they’ve learned lessons from the Russia-Georgia war by acting together to threaten sanctions against Moscow and aid to Ukraine.
Dealing with Moscow should begin with not being deceived about Putin’s intentions. As long as his actions in Crimea result in no direct consequences for him, he will continue trying to show the world just what a tough guy he is.
