Box office collection: Sonam Kapoor’s Bewakoofiyaan has a dull start coz of Kangana Ranaut’s Queen

Director Nupur Asthana’s romantic comedy Bewakoofiyaan starring Sonam Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rishi Kapoor in the lead has failed at the box office miserably. The film managed to rake in a little above Rs 2 crore on its first day. Ideally Bewakoofiyaan should have got a great start considering the weekend got extended till Monday due to Holi. However, Sonam-Ayushmann starrer kicked off on a slow note and things remained pretty much the same over the weekend as well. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Bewakoofiyaan Fri 2.23 cr, Sat 2.51 cr. Total – 4.74 cr nett.India biz.” On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut’s Queen fared well even in its second weekend. Vikas Bahl’s chick flick has certainly created hungama the box office. “Queen [Wknd 2] Fri 2.15 cr, Sat 3.75 cr, Sun 4.75 cr. Grand total - 29.50 cr nett… Wknd 2 better than Wknd 1… India biz… SUPERB,” posted Adarsh.

According to Boxofficeindia, “Bewakoofiyaan had a poor weekend grossing around Rs 6.75 crore nett over its first weekend. The film started on a low note and the growth was limited over the weekend. The collections are better than Total Siyapaa but that film was almost a total washout.

As for Kangy’s film, “Queen continued its fantastic run on its second Monday as it collected around 2.75-3 crore nett due to a holiday for Holi on Monday. Queen has chances to hit the 50 crore nett mark and is likely to emerge the first outright hit of the year,” reported Boxofficeindia.

Going by the figures, it’s clear that Kangana’s Queen is way ahead of Sonam’s Bewakoofiyaan in the numbers game. If Vikas Bahl’s latest outing continues to do well at the ticket windows then we won’t be surprised if Queen soon enters the Rs 100 crore club. In fact, it should, hai na? But the box office collection of Queen could get affected as four films will hit the screens this week – Sunny Leone’s Ragini MMS 2, Mahie Gill-Sharman Joshi-Meera Chopra starrer Gang of Ghosts, Ankhon Dekhi and Lakshmi.

Or who knows it could be the other way round coz Kangana’s flick has indeed impressed everyone – from critics to audience to Bollywood bigwigs and is steadily climbing up the money ladder.

Kangana Ranaut’s Queen gets a thumbs up from Bollywood

The P.K. actor just couldn’t stop singing praises for the film Queen and its heroine

Kangana Ranaut has found a huge fan club in Bollywood post the release of her film Queen. Not only has Kangy overshadowed Madhuri Dixit Nene and Juhi Chawla starrer Gulaab Gang at the box office, but she has now found fans in B-town biggies like Aamir Khan and Karan Johar, joining her fast growing list of starry fans is none other than Salman Khan’s brother Arbaaz Khan.

Actor turned director Arbaaz Khan is the latest celebrity to be floored by the actor’s performance in the movie. He has called her an extremely gifted actor. “I am going to personally talk to her (Kangana) and congratulate her. She is fabulous in the film, she is so natural, she is so gifted and talented. In this film you can see her come into her own, she is so endearing, watchable and this film is beautiful,” the 46-year-old said after a special screening of Queen.

Arbaaz further praised the film, saying that it is one of the best he has seen in recent times. “It is an outstanding and a terrific film. Kangana has done such brilliant work and it is a very well-written and beautiful film. One of the best films that I have seen in recent times and I think it will do really well,” Arbaaz said.

Directed by Vikas Bahl, Queen is receiving a wonderful response at the box office. It is the story of a woman who goes on her honeymoon alone and enjoys her journey of self-realisation.

‘Queen’ review: Kangana Ranaut is the ‘Queen’ of hearts

Movie Review Queen: Kangana Ranaut revels in her solidly-written role, and delivers a first rate, heart-felt performance.

Stop press: I have just seen an honest-to-goodness, full-fledged, full-bodied film. A FILM, hear me? Not an American sit com masquerading as one, or yet another meaningless 70s masala remake. ‘Queen’ is a significant Bollywood marker, a film that is intensely local and gloriously global, with a terrific lead performance by Kangana Ranaut, in a story that bubbles over with real feeling and meaning.
Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is dumped just a day before her wedding by her fiance Vijay (Rajkumar Rao). Devastated, she decides to flee, because staying home to lick her wounds is not an option. So, she finds herself in Paris, and the journey she embarks on makes ‘Queen’ the kind of coming- of-age, discovery-of-self tale that Bollywood usually doesn’t touch with a bargepole. Because women-centric films don’t do well, do they? This is where Phantom Productions, which has made this ( their first was ‘Lootera’), has stepped in. (See Pics: Kangana’s last minute promotions)
It starts with a loud Punjabi wedding, and you enter the film, mildly diverted by Rani’s loud Punjabi family, doing ‘giddha-shiddha’, ‘mehendi-shendi’, but not before you’ve had time to register that the Rajouri Garden ‘mithai’-shop-owning middle-class-ness of the Mehras is just right. And that Mummyji, Daddyji, the plump ‘chota bhai’, and Dadiji are all pitch perfect.
Big Punjabi weddings and Bollywood have had a long relationship, but where ‘Queen‘, both the girl and the film, start coming into their own, is when Rani is left to fend for herself, first in Paris, and then Amsterdam. A lone Indian girl, a ‘behenji’ with a ‘desi ghee tadka’, would usually fumble her way across crowded streets and annoyed pedestrians and find herself in a handsome stranger’s arms, sing a few songs, do a few ‘nakhras’ and gratefully accept ‘mandap’ and ‘mangalsutra’.
But not Rani aka Queen. She does make silly touristy mistakes, nearly gets mugged but doesn’t let it get to her, and discovers she has a spine after all. Lucking into a long-legged hotel maid Vijay Lakshmi (Lisa Haydon) is the first departure from standard Bollywood practice: this other Vijay takes Rani under her wing, drags her into a store with lovely Parisian clothes (these Paris maids are not just drop dead sexy, and enjoy their libido, they can afford all those designer threads?), and generally hand-holds Rani for an enjoyable spell.
Bahl’s second directorial venture is a delight: his first, ‘Chillar Party’, had some spark, but nothing prepared me for this. The story, which could easily have slipped into mush, stays free of drippy sentimentality, barring one or two raised-violin scenes. Rani is given interesting companions: in Amsterdam, she is handed a multi-cultural trio, a vertically challenged Japanese, a black Frenchman, and a good looking Spaniard, as well as a dishy Italian. Again, this could have turned into a clichéd international-accented soup, but despite a couple of exaggerated mis-steps, it stays grounded. And Rani is well on her way to learning the meaning of friendship and freedom in a land far away from home, where girls have to live with the word ‘allowed’ .
Kangana Ranaut revels in her solidly-written role, and delivers a first rate, heart-felt performance. There are only a couple of slips (in one, she pronounces the word ‘fiance’ perfectly, all rounded vowels: given her Rajouriness, this should have been a straight opening of mouth). I was also quite taken aback by the speed with which she junks her ‘chatak’ Lajpat Nagar ‘kurti’ look and adopts pastel, understated dresses. But no matter, I found myself watching Kangana Ranaut much more than her clothes. Her mobile face has sensibly been kept free from pancake, and more than anything else, Ranaut comes off believable: she does hurt like no other Bollywood heroine currently can.
Lisa Haydon nearly walks off with the film in her small role. She doesn’t place a single foot wrong as she strides long and smooth next to the diminutive Kangana. She left me asking for more. And the bunch of ‘foreigners’ that Rani raps with in Amsterdam are all well drawn, and what is even better, nicely rounded. The one part I didn’t feel as convinced about was Rao’s: he is made to whine and mumble altogether too much, as he makes his way through the film in uneasy fits and starts.
But that’s all right because this film isn’t about him. It’s about, hallelujah, her. It’s probably quite deliberate that Lisa Haydon’s name is also Vijay. And Ranaut is Rani, Queen of Hearts.
You go, girl.

KANGANA SAYS SHE HAS GIVEN HER BEST IN ‘QUEEN

Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Queen’ released yesterday. The film has got a lot of appreciation from the critics and it has also taken a decent start at the box-office. Kangana, who is playing the central character of Rani in the flick, says that she has given her best in the film.

The 26 year old actress says, "My role in 'Queen' is very challenging and as an actor, I believe I have never done such good work in any film before. I haven't got such a good opportunity before."

The movie also features Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao.

‘Revolver Rani’ presents Kangana Ranaut in a look like never seen before. This time she comes as Alka Gujjar, the ‘Woman who will take the pants of mankind’ almost literally.
The actress essays the role of a local goon who loves ‘phasion, phun aur gun’ – Fashion, fun and guns. Kangana gets it right with the rustic accent and look which is yet again de-glam.
In a sequence in the trailer, Kangana dons a quasi Princess Leia look of the Star Wars series. Though she checks the costume box there but lets her hair be.

The film also stars Vir Das as an aspiring actor who wants to make it big in Mumbai and seeks Kangana’s help for the same. The trailer’s snippets also suggest that Vir Das plays Kangana’s boy toy in the film!

The film also stars Piyush Mishra, Zakir Hussain and Pankaj Saraswat and is slated for release on 11th April.
The film is directed by Sai Kabir Shrivastav and is produced by Raju Chadha and Crouching Tiger Production.
