Entire wedding party takes the plunge

CROSSLAKE: It wasn't just the bride and groom taking the plunge at this central Minnesota wedding.

Dan and Jackie Anderson lined up on a dock with all their groomsmen and bridesmaids for a photo shoot about an hour before the wedding was due to begin in Crosslake last weekend. But the weight of the 22 people was too much for the dock and it collapsed beneath them into the lake.

A couple of bridesmaids were able to dash off the dock, but the rest ended up in waist- or chest-deep water.

The bride, groom and their entire wedding party were still drying off as the guests arrived for the wedding.

KMSP-TV says despite the lake plunge, the ceremony started just 10 minutes late.

 

PHC makes three army officers party

PESHAWAR: The Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), Mazhar Alam Miankhel, observed on Tuesday that those in charge of internment centres were not producing the record of internees intentionally.

“The record of the internees is not being provided intentionally to the court. Everyone is giving replies in the court and denying the presence of missing persons but the court would know through the record of internment centres which law-enforcement agency is involved and has shifted the missing persons to the internment centres,” the PHC chief justice observed during the hearing of the missing persons cases.

The chief justice remarked that all those officials from the police, intelligence agencies and military, who are submitting replies of denial on affidavits in the court, would face action once it was proved that they were involved in the missing persons cases.

During the hearing of 25 missing persons cases, all the officials of the police, Military Intelligence (MI) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in most cases submitted replies on affidavits claiming ignorance about the whereabouts of the missing persons.

However, the bench comprising the chief justice and Justice Malik Manzoor Hussain issued notices to military officers and directed Major Irfan to submit replies of military officers through the General Headquarters (GHQ) before the next hearing as there were specific allegations against them for taking away the missing persons.

The bench issued notices to Colonel Arshad and Major Dilawar of the 1st Baloch Regiment Unit of Pakistan Army and directed them to explain their position in replies through the GHQ before the next hearing as there were specific allegations against them for picking up Muhammad Khan, the husband of the petitioner Naik Seerata, a resident of Ouch area, Lower Dir district, on June 29, 2009.

The bench also issued notices to former councillor Muhammad Ali and two elders, Shahzeb and Muhammad Zeb, to appear in person at the next hearing as it was on their assurance that the missing person Muhammad Khan was handed over to the military officers.

In another case, the bench issued notices to Colonel Zafran, Major Mohsin and Subedar Ameer of the 10 Punjab Regiment of Pakistan Army and asked Major Irfan to ensure submission of their replies through the GHQ before the next hearing of the case.

The father of a missing person, Umar Gul, in his petition claimed that the army personnel picked up his son on June 12, 2013 from the Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency and since then his whereabouts were not known. “I fought alongside the Pakistan Army in the 1965 War. But today our own army picked up my innocent son and my family doesn’t know if he is alive or dead,” the elderly man told the bench.

The chief justice told Major Irfan to notice the agonies of the person and inform the high-ups of the plight of the old parents of missing persons.

The bench also issued a notice to Captain Shah Faisal of 56 Baloch Regiment deployed in Hangu and directed him to submit his reply through the GHQ before the next hearing. Abdul Samad, the son of a missing person Qazi Rehman, had filed the petition and claimed that his father was picked up by an army officer at the Atiq Army check-post in Hangu district on January 31, 2014 and since then his whereabouts were not known.

The bench also issued a show-cause notice to secretary Home and Tribal Affairs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to appear in person as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him for non-compliance with the court’s orders in the missing persons cases.The bench in some cases sought replies from ministries of Interior and Defence and adjourned the cases to July 1, 2014.

PPP demands resignation from Abidi over party policy violation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has demanded Faisal Raza Abidi to tender resignation from his senate membership over violation of party policy, Geo News reported.

According to a communiqué issued here Wednesday, PPP General Secretary Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, on the directives of party leadership, demanded resignation from Abidi.

Abidi had violated party policy, therefore, the PPP leadership has demanded him to resign as senator.

Indian party leader sparks backlash over rape remarks

NEW DELHI: The mother of a student who was fatally gang-raped on a bus led the outrage Friday against an Indian political leader who described three convicted multiple rapists as "boys" who had made "mistakes".

During a rally in the state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, Mulayam Singh Yadav said his Samajwadi Party would try to change the law on punishments for rapists after India´s ongoing elections as he spoke out in defence of three men who have been sentenced to death for repeat sexual assaults.

"Three poor fellows have been sentenced to death. Should rape cases lead to hanging?" said the 74-year-old Yadav, whose party governs the electorally crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.

"They are boys, they make mistakes," he added in reference to the three men aged 28, 21 and 19 who were sentenced in Mumbai last week for their part in two gang-rapes.

They were the first death sentences to be handed down for multiple sex attacks since the law was toughened following the outrage over the December 2012 attack on the bus in New Delhi.

The mother of the 23-year-old victim, who died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital two weeks after the assault, called Yadav a "disgusting and shameless" politician and urged voters to reject leaders who "don´t understand the torture women go through".

"His comments hurt us so much," the mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told.

"Every day women get raped and they are all mistakes? He talks about doing away with the death sentence for rapists but parents like us feel even death is not enough for rapists. They deserve worse."

Yadav´s remarks sparked a backlash on social media where #backingrapists and ´Mulayam Singh´ were top trending topics on Twitter.

Political parties and women´s rights groups poured scorn on the 74-year-old ex-wrestler over his "misogynistic" comments and demanded an apology.

Anti-graft party faces test as India votes in third round

NEW DELHI : India´s upstart anti-graft party faces a key test Thursday as the national capital votes in the first major stage of the country´s marathon general elections.

The third phase of voting begins at 7:00 am local time (01:30 GMT) in 92 constituencies, representing a fifth of the 543-seat lower house, across the capital and 13 other states, including Maoist insurgency-hit eastern India.

But analysts say the spotlight is on the Delhi birthplace of the Aam Aadmi (Common Man) Party (AAP), even if support for it may have lost some steam.

"The enthusiasm, the hope has died. People have become disillusioned with them," Delhi-based veteran political analyst and commentator Amulya Ganguli told AFP.

The AAP has struggled to shake the "quitter" tag used by critics to dismiss it following the dramatic resignation of party chief Arvind Kejriwal just 49 days after it took power in Delhi´s state elections.

"They didn´t stay on to govern and their drama-creating behaviour put people off," Ganguli said.

The nine-stage elections, which kicked off Monday are expected to vault to power the Hindu nationalist opposition at a time of low economic growth, seething anger over widespread corruption and warnings about religious unrest.

The 814-million-strong electorate is forecast to inflict a punishing defeat on the Congress party after its decade-long rule and elect the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by conservative hardliner Narendra Modi.

The AAP is contesting its first general elections since it was spawned by a 2011 anti-graft movement and rode a wave of public anger over a string of corruption scandals.

It has promised to clean up politics by weeding out politicians with criminal cases.Nearly 10 percent of politicians who contested Monday´s first phase of elections that wind up May 12 were charged with attempted murder, rape and other crimes, according to advocacy group Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Last month, ADR said 37 percent of BJP candidates and 25 percent of the Congress hopefuls announced so far faced criminal cases.

- National Ambitions -
The AAP has fielded over 400 candidates as it pushes ahead with its national ambitions and Kejriwal has pitted himself against Modi in the holy Hindu city of Varanasi.

The AAP won 28 of 70 seats in its maiden Delhi state elections. Although analysts say there is little chance the party will replicate its success nationally, the AAP still hopes to win at least 100 seats and says it is confident of wining five of the seven up for grabs in Delhi.

But Ganguli was skeptical. "Votes will go into their opponents´ hands this time. I would be surprised if they win even 10 seats nationally," he said.

There are mounting signs of disillusion with the AAP with some voters slapping and smearing ink on Kejriwal and his colleagues at rallies, while they campaign without security in a bid to end the VIP culture of India´s political elite.

Kejriwal, who adheres to independence icon Mahatma Gandhi´s non-violence credo, has consistently forgiven his attackers and went to the home Wednesday of a man who slapped him to hear his grievances.

Among the AAP candidates is the independence leader´s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi, Bollywood actor Gul Panag and former TV journalist Ashutosh.Voters "realise the BJP and Congress are thoroughly corrupt and they want a change", senior AAP leader Prashant Bhushan said, calling the party "the clean and honest alternative".

New schedule for PTI UK party elections announced

LONDON: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that the party’s intra-party elections will be held on Sunday 13th April in 12 regions of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

PTI leader Imran Khan had directed the postponement of the elections about two weeks ago to first review structure for its overseas chapters. A ‘Special Committee’ comprising of Asad Umar, Shafqat Mehmood, Saifullah Niazi and Dr Arif Alvi was tasked to review functioning of international chapters and submit recommendations for improvements.

A source in the PTI informed that the ‘Special Committee’ submitted their report to the PTI Central Executive (CEC) and Core Committees (CC) on 17th March in which several recommendations to strengthen Office of International Chapters (OIC) were made as well as recommendations on how to cater to the needs of party’s overseas chapters.

The PTI CEC and CC showed their satisfaction over functioning of the UK chapter and it was agreed that it was already in compliance with all the recommendations made by the committee. It was recommended that no reason existed to further put UK intra-party elections on hold and it was important that new schedule should be announced.

It has been announced that the election voting day will be Sunday 13th April; Monday 31st March will be the membership cut-off deadline; and Sunday 6th April has been set as the candidate panel nomination deadline. The elections will be held in 12 regions which include London, East of England, South East, South West, North East, North West, West Midlands, East Midlands, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber, East of, Scotland, West of Scotland.

Each region will elect a body comprising of president, vice president, information secretary and general secretary. Thereafter, national body for UK consisting of president and general secretary will be elected from amongst regional elected representatives.

These are 3rd intra-party elections in UK and the chapter has become an important overseas arm of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf which is contributing financially as well as in policy making of the party. Britain has played an important role in taking the PTI in the top league of Pakistani political parties. Its UK chapter is considered a leading overseas chapter in terms of all organisational aspects. The PTI has the distinction of being the only Pakistani political party that is now holding elections on time in a proper democratic manner. The MQM in the UK has a disciplined chapter like it has in Karachi. The PPP and the PML-N are fast becoming irrelevant because both parties lack any democracy in their ranks and these parties are divided in various factions. PTI has become probably the strongest overseas Pakistani party with more than 3,000 paid-up members, mainly youth. As compared the parties lag far behind.

Kareena & Genelia host a dinner party for Humshakals

 

The entire cast of Humshakals has been shooting in Mauritius and has been away from home for quite some time now.

A source close to the team said, 'It was a party time when Kareena and Genelia came on the sets. They decided to have a small get together for the entire cast and surprised everyone by throwing a Seafood and Salad dinner party for them. Everyone had a great time together and the party went on for a really long time.'

The latest that we hear is that she will soon co-host a party with Gauri Khan in Dubai to promote their upcoming Project Naira. This is a luxury mansion project in Goa and will comprise 12 villas. These are to be designed by Suzanne while the international furniture designer Andrew Martin will also be involved.

Britney Spears leaves party after panic attack?

Britney Spears, who suffers from bipolar disorder had also shaved her head some years ago.

Pop star Britney Spears reportedly left a party after suffering a panic attack as the overcrowded gathering made her uncomfortable.
The 32-year-old singer, who recently attended Sir Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscar-viewing party, made a quick exit from the event just minutes after arriving as she had apparently encountered a panic attack, reported Contactmusic.
“Britney was excited when she first went to the party but moments later she was fazed about being at such an over-crowded event,” a source said.
“She started to break out in a sweat and become short of breath, it was like she was having a panic attack ,” the source added.
Spears, who suffers from bipolar disorder had also shaved her head some years ago.
“Britney still finds large crowds nerve-wracking and doesn’t feel comfortable at showbiz events. The chaos of the red carpet and all the unfamiliar faces is very daunting, a source said.
“She manages to block out the crowd and put on an act when she’s on stage, but it’s harder when she’s socialising,” the source added.

India far-right party supports Modi for PM

NEW DELHI: A far-right wing Indian party on Sunday publicly threw its support behind opposition Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi for prime minister ahead of next month's general elections.
The firebrand head of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Raj Thackeray, said he would back Modi, while announcing that his party would also field a handful of candidates for the elections.
"We will support Narendra Modi for the prime minister's post. Modi should become the prime minister of the country," 45-year-old Thackeray told supporters in Mumbai where his party is based.
The MNS, a rival offshoot of the hardline right-wing Shiv Sena, has a record of inciting riots and other violence mainly in its opposition of migrants in western Maharashtra state of which Mumbai is the capital.
Thousands of poor migrants from mostly northern India flock to the financial hub in search of jobs, which the MNS sees as a threat to the local Marathi workforce.
The MNS champions the culture, language and rights of regional Maharathis over so-called "outsiders".
Despite the support, it is unclear whether Thackeray's move will help Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is tipped by opinion polls to defeat the ruling Congress party at polls starting on April 7.
According to reports, a BJP leader urged Thackeray days earlier not to field MNS candidates to preserve the BJP's ties with traditional ally Shiv Sena and avoid splitting the vote against Congress in Maharashtra.
After Shiv Sena took power in the Maharashtra government in 1994, it changed the city's name from Bombay to Mumbai to underline the region's Marathi identity in a move that attracted worldwide attention.
Modi, the chief minister of western Gujarat state since 2001, is seen as a pro-business reformer. But his Hindu nationalism and links to deadly anti-Muslim riots in 2002 in his home state have worried religious minorities and defenders of India's officially secular character.

Aamir Khan: I will not align with any political party

 "I want to be away from politics," said Aamir Khan.

 Aamir Khan said here today that he doesn’t support any political party and would not align with any of them at an event related to his TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’.
“I want to be away from politics. I want to align with issues that are important. I support a thought and not a party. I want to support an issue irrespective of any political party. I would not wish to align with any party,” Aamir told PTI.
Aamir claimed that he cried during the show, while talking about a touching incident of forgiveness.
“I felt I cried too much on the show. I am an emotional person. I cry when I hear heartbreaking stories. There are times when I cried and the channel people cut that part as 15 minutes of crying is too much, since there are other important issues to talk about,” he said.
Aamir said that he visited Gaya in Bihar yesterday to announce the second season of the ‘Satyamev Jayate’ TV show, from the very spot where one Dashrath Manjhi broke a mountain and made a road for villagers.
“This is an inspiration to all the people who wish to do something. I salute his courage and determination,” Aamir said.
The second season of the show has a new feature where people may vote for their opinions on any issue which they wish to follow.
“We have introduced a vote for change campaign where people can vote and give their opinion on any issue. We plan to give these (poll) details to the government,” he said.
It has also been decided to air the second season of the show in three slots, so that people could absorb the issue, he said.

Review: Youngistaan has good party music

Youngistaan soundtrack doesn't have any dull moments, says Joginder Tuteja.

The biggest hit of Jackky Bhagnani's career so far is Chaar Baj Gaye (F.A.L.T.U.). So, when another film starring him is titled Yongistaan, one expects yet another ‘Party all night’ album that targets the youth.

Jeet Gannguli, who was one of the major forces behind the music of Aashiqui 2, brings in some more good tunes with Suno Na Sangemarmar.

With the backdrop of the Taj Mahal, the song has man-of-the-season, Arijit Singh, doing the honours even as the sound of the flute and overall arrangement reminds one of Zara Zara, the popular number from Jackky's dad, Vashu Bhagnani's, Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein.

This Kausar Munir number takes some time to grow on you but once it does, you do not mind its remix version. However, the original version scores more.

Shiraz Uppal is the composer and singer for Mere Khuda which is set in Pakistani pop mode and does well for the four minute long duration that it plays.

A situational song that has good arrangements backing it, Mere Khuda has the kind of lyrics by Shakeel Sohail that fit well into the scheme of things. Even though the overall sound is quite contemporary, one does feel the absence of a catchy hook.

The song that does boast of an immensely catchy hook is Tanki. Rest assured, the song has enough ammunition to take it comfortably into the Chaar Baj Gaye zone.

Composer Sneha Khanwalkar surprises here with the kind of range that she demonstrates. Associated with music with a rustic flavour, she goes full-on techno with this foot tapping number that maintains a good tempo right through its five minute duration.

Written by Syed Ahmad Afzal along with Jackky Bhagnani himself, the song arrives in two versions, led by Mika and Bhaven Dhanak respectively.

While Apeksha Dandekar is the common element in both the songs along with Sneha who is also heard as a singer, Hard Kaur appears in the second version. The song has the potential to become popular with time.

Shiraz and Shakeel return with a qawalli titled Daata Di Diwani. The number holds your attention from the very beginning. It’s a complete shift from Mere Khuda.

It has a soothing appeal, with just a tabla playing in the background. This easy-on-the- ears number has Rafaqat Ali Khan joining Shiraz behind the mike and lending an overall smooth feel to this classy-sounding number.

The sound of Youngistaan is heard at the end, with Shree D-Ishq Bector coming up with Youngistaan Anthem. The song has the feel of a theme song and though music and lyrics are just about okay, there is a good hook that comes once the key word 'youngistaan' arrives.

In fact, the way this Siddharth Banerjee written number is sung by Shree D and Ishq Bector, its obvious this theme will be played in multiple instances. It should fit in well with the film's narrative.

Overall, Youngistaan doesn't have any dull moments.

Salman Khan to throw party for LMFAO rapper Sky Blu

According to Mid-day.com Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is planning to throw a party for American rapper Skyler Austen Gordy, when the latter visits India this month.

Gordy, better known by his stage name Sky Blu, will be touring the country’s two major cities Delhi and Mumbai on 8th and 9th March respectively, to promote his new singles.

During his tour stop, Sky Blu, who teamed up with his uncle Stefan Kendal Gordy to form electro hop band ‘LMFAO’, is looking forward to meeting with the ‘Dabangg’ star.

Furthermore, if rumours are to be believed he will also be seeing ‘Chaar Botal Vodka’ singer Yo Yo Honey Singh for a possible joint venture.

Ex-Indian army chief joins opposition party

NEW DELHI: A former Indian army chief who resigned from the military following a controversy over his age Saturday announced he had joined the Hindu nationalist opposition ahead of looming elections.
India's massive armed forces normally stay out of politics, but retired General V.K. Singh had been tipped to enter the arena since resigning as the head of the army in May 2012 after being accused of fudging his birth date to extend his service term.
Singh said he was joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -- tipped to sweep the polls due by May -- to "elect a stable, powerful government that can take decisions in the national interest".
The ex-army chief had been expected to become a BJP member after appearing last year at a rally with the opposition party's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, where they addressed retired soldiers.
BJP backers are hoping Singh's support will bring votes from India's million-strong defence forces, an important constituency.
Several other former defence officers joined the BJP with Singh, who sought to rally the crowd with cries of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" -- "hail soldier, hail farmer".
Singh's relations with the scandal-tainted Congress government, which is struggling in opinion polls, were soured by the row over his birth date.
In an unprecedented move by a serving army chief, Singh dragged the government to the Supreme Court in a bid to prolong his tenure by nearly a year.
The trouble sprang from two sets of birth records held by the army for the former general. The court sided with the government in its view that the birth date, which made Singh older, should prevail.
After retiring from his post, Singh blamed the government for a host of problems during his two years as army chief including rows over dilapidated weaponry.
In his address at the BJP's headquarters in New Delhi on Saturday, Singh accused the government of failing to ensure the security of India's armed forces.
