Capello names his World Cup squad

MOSCOW: Russia coach Fabio Capello on Monday named his final 23-man squad to play in the World Cup finals led by experienced defender Sergei Ignashevich, midfielder Roman Shirokov and forward Alexander Kerzhakov.

The 31-year-old Kerzhakov is the only player in the squad who has previous World Cup experience having been in the squad that competed in 2002, the last time Russia reached the final stages.

Capello trimmed his original squad of 30 down to 25 in mid-May and the two players to miss out on being in the final selection were Denis Cheryshev from Spanish hi-flyers Sevilla and Pavel Mogilevets of Rubin Kazan.

The former England manager, who recently extended his contract with the Russian Football Union until the end of the 2018 World Cup, retained talented youngsters like Andrei Semenov and Maxim Kanunnikov.

He named his final squad two days after a 1-1 draw with Norway in a friendly match. Last month Russia defeated Slovakia 1-0 in their first World Cup warm-up match.

All of Capello´s squad are from Russian Premier League sides including six from Dynamo Moscow, who finished fourth in the league this season.

Five players represent champions CSKA, who retained their title this season, and four are from runners-up Zenit St Petersburg. Russia will open their World Cup campaign against South Korea on June 18. Capello´s side have been drawn in World Cup Group H, which also has Belgium and Algeria as they make their first appearance at the finals in 12 years.

The last time Russia played in the World Cup finals in 2002 they went up against Belgium, Japan and Tunisia, but failed to advance into the knock-out stages.

The best performance by a Russian team in the World Cup dates back to 1966 in England when the then Soviet Union came fourth.

Musharraf asks court to also try his associates

 

ISLAMABAD: Former military dictator Pervez Musharraf’s counsel Barrister Farogh Naseem on Tuesday requested the Special Court to also try the associates of his client for assisting him in declaring the state of emergency on November 3, 2007.
The three-member Special Court, headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar, resumed hearing into the Federation’s complaint for initiating the treason case against Musharraf for abrogating the Constitution and declaring the state of emergency in the country on Nov 3, 2007.

Justice Faisal Arab told the defence counsel that the court could not open all the cases of abrogation of the Constitution since 1956, as its mandate was limited to hearing the instant case.

The remarks came when Musharraf’s defence counsel Dr. Farogh Naseem argued that in terms of international jurisprudence, there could be no selective prosecution of Musharraf and quoted Article 12(2) of the Constitution requiring a trial under Article 6 with effect from 23.3.1956.

Dr Naseem said the reference had been made in passing for the purposes of the main case and for the time being for the purpose of arguments on the application seeking the disclosure of FIA report Article 12(2) was not relevant and therefore this question should be kept open.

He also requested the courtto take up application (No. 12 of 2014) in which a request had been made for the disclosure and supply of copies of inquiries/investigation report of the FIA, which was the foundational basis of the complaint itself.

He said vide order dated March 7. 2014 the court had clearly held that as and when evidence on material was brought on record that the accused was aided, abetted and collaborated by others, it would decide the issue in that regard.

He said in order to bring such evidence on record, the first step was to require the prosecution to file the FIA report, which clearly contained a dissenting note by one Hussain Asghar that Musharraf alone should not be tried and that his aides and abettors should also be made co-accused.

The defense counsel contended that in the proclamation of emergency the prime minister, all governors and members of the military leadership were disclosed to be the consultees.He submitted that the proclamation of emergency was a public document, duly gazetted and published in the law reports, in view whereof, as per the Qanun-e-Shahadat a presumption of truth of contents of the said gazette was in the field. Therefore, he said the accused had sufficiently discharged the tactical or prima facie burden of proof and the ultimate or legal burden to disprove the same now rested upon the prosecution.

“In terms of the mandate of the court order of March 7, 2014, sufficient material was now on record for the court to pass orders implicating the co-accused,” Farogh Naseem said.The defense counsel further contended that there had been violation of Article 265 © of CrPC that relates to supply of documents to the accused. He cited Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case wherein it was stressed in the interest of justice.

Prosecutor Akram Sheikh however submitted that the law does not require him to disclose the FIA’s report and therefore he would not disclose the same to the accused unless otherwise directed by the court.

“I cannot hand a Kalashnikov and a hand grenade and your lordship has to order me in this regard and I will hand it over to the court”, Sheikh contended. He recalled that the court had ruled earlier that it will cross the bridge when it comes.

“So let things come at the proper stage as it is not a case of oral evidence but a case of documentary evidence,” Sheikh submitted adding, “let cross the bridge when it comes.”

He submitted that the court gave its verdict on March 7 on the trial of others involved in Nov 3 decision according to which if evidences were found against anyone in the records then the court would consider it.

He further recalled to the court that the copies of the complaint in the instant case had already been handed over to Anwar Mansoor Khan. He said the application was filed three-months earlier and the court had already decided it as well.

He further submitted that Article 265 © of CrPC as referred to by the defense counsel was not applicable in this case adding that Article 265 © of CrPC and section 5 of Special Court (Amendment) Act 1976 are different.

“Just throw the CrPC,” Sheikh contended. “Is it your argument that Sections 5 and 6 of the Special Court Act 1976 oust the application of Section 265 ©”, Justice Faisal Arab asked Akram Sheikh.

Yes, Sheikh replied.

He contended that under Section 5 of the Special Court Act, the federal government was obligated to provide only three documents which included details of the crime, complaint and list of witnesses.

He further said that as the special court was not a high court, it could not apply Section 561 of the military law to this case.

Akram Sheikh contended that the government was not obligated to present the joint investigation report (JIT) and the officer who gave the dissenting note was also a witness.

Akram Sheikh submitted that he would submit his reply overnight in the application and the learned defense counsel could cross-examine him then. Sheikh said that he will continue his arguments today (Wednesday).

During the hearing Akram Sheikh asked Farogh Naseem to give him his email address for sending his reply.When Farogh Naseem told Sheikh to send it to Chaudhry Faisal Hussain, his team member, Sheikh in a light tone replied that he was scared of Chaudhry Faisal.In response, Farogh Naseem told Sheikh that he could give him the email address of Rana Ejaz.

Meanwhile, the Special Court ruled that the decision on appointment of prosecutor in the instant case challenged by the defense counsel would be announced on April 18.Dr. Farogh Naseem pointed out that orders on an application pertaining to the disqualification of Akram Shaikh as prosecutor had been reserved for March 26, 2014 and the court observe Shaukat Aziz that before the evidence was to be recorded the application in respect of the prosecutor would be decided.

Justice Faisal Arab however observed that orders on the matter of appointment of prosecutor would be announced on Friday, April 18.The court adjourned the hearing till today (Wednesday).

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Railways and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique has said that some quarters disliked his recent statement about the armed forces but he sticks to his viewpoint on the issue. He however said that the judiciary and military should not be criticised.

The federal minister, speaking at a ceremony here on Sunday said, “the judiciary delivers justice while the army ensures our security,” adding that the armed forces and judiciary are sensitive institutions.

The armed forces of Pakistan were in a war with terrorists, he added.However, Saad Rafique reiterated that the nation would condemn it whenever the army was found involved in any unconstitutional step.“The army’s professional and lawful role is acceptable. But the nation will condemn whenever there is any unconstitutional move,” he told reporters.

Musharraf always said emergency was not his individual act, says lawyer

ISLAMABAD: Talking to Geo News on Friday, Barrister Farogh Nasim has said that from the beginning Pervez Musharraf’s stand was that the imposition of emergency was not his individual decision. If any of his lawyers had said against it in the Supreme Court, it is not Musharraf’s stand.

He said the Pakistan Army has to decide that imposition of emergency by Pervez Musharraf was his individual act or was driven from “institutional suggestion”.

Ansar Abbasi alleged that Naseem issued this statement to save his client. He said the army could save Musharraf only through martial law which will leave the country in trouble. He said Altaf Hussain of the MQM has already demanded Martial Law through different ways.

He said army is not a group of 500,000 troops but it is an army of 180 million people. He said the army should take into consideration its perception among the masses if the army gets itself involved in Musharraf case.

He said the legal way for Musharraf goes through the court. He said Musharraf’s lawyers have objections to the judiciary and intend to put the army against the judiciary and the parliament which would ultimately lead to Martial Law.

Ferogh Nasim said his statement that the army should save its chief the way lawyers saved the former chief justice meant to highlight the context in which the lawyers launched their movement.

He said the army should eliminate doubts surrounding the debate if the emergency was an individual’s or institution’s decision. He said all matters related to Musharraf should be settled within the ambit of the constitution. He said he did not talk of Martial Law and the army has constitutional and legal remedies to offer Musharraf when the time comes.

He questioned on what basis Abbasi is saying that Musharraf’s lawyers are talking aboutm Martial Law while what all they say is that constitutional and legal methods should be applied to save Musharraf.

He said Musharraf was the army chief when Martial Law was imposed on October 12 1999 but the history should be traced back to 1950s. He said the SC has written in its detailed order that Musharraf’s lawyers have admitted that imposition of emergency was his individual act whereas neither he, nor his client, has ever adopted this stance. He said Musharraf has always stated that he has aced upon the advice given to him on this matter.

Saad says ISPR remarks not linked with his anti-Musharraf diatribes

ISLAMABAD: Khawaja Saad Rafiq, federal minister for railways, has said that he endorses statement of army chief that dignity of institution of army must be preserved adding that it is not the duty of army chief only rather it is the duty of the whole nation to protect respect, prestige and pride of the institution of armed forces of Pakistan.

He said that in fact Musharraf is a person who has brought disrepute to the institution of army more than anyone else.

Talking to The News, Saad said that only those are negatively linking his statements with the ISPR’s who want save to Musharraf.

He said Musharraf is a politician and heads political party APML and his party workers, mostly lawyers, are playing dirty games to make institution of army controversial by making such linkages in their bid to save Musharraf.

Saad Rafiq said that his present point of view about Musharraf is same as it was in 2000, in 2002 or in 2008 and it will always remain same.

He alleged that Musharraf has brought a bad name to the institution of army and had defamed the institution. Saad said that in his statement he only discussed Musharraf and criticized his negative role of acting against the constitution of the country and institution of armed forces.

Saad said that the government and armed forces are on the same page on every issue and this specific issue of Musharraf has no link whatsoever with the institution of army or the government.

He added that the link of the government with Musharraf’s issue is limited to ECL.

He said that PML-N government considers that Musharraf’s name could not be excluded from the ECL as he is facing the allegations of treason, the most heinous crime described in the basic book of the country.

A beefy cop besotted by a college girl goes about spouting knock knock jokes. Taking a cue from him, I’ll start with one of mine. Knock knock. Who’s there? Err, me. Me who? Me trying to hoot, that’s who.

I did manage to find a few laughs in ‘Main Tera Hero’, David Dhawan’s showcase created solely for his son Varun, but it was hard work. Because this is David precariously close to making my eyes glaze over, with long stretches of flatness, and forced laughter.

The film may be a Telugu remake, but the template is very Dhawan, with the usual mix of buffoons and goons and mistaken identities playing ‘I spy’ in a Bangkok hotel masquerading as a home.

Layabout Seenu (Varun Dhawan) reaches Bengaluru with the single aim of earning a college degree. Instead, he starts chasing the pretty Sunaina (Ileana D’ Cruz), who is being menaced by a tall, burly policeman (Arunoday Singh). A rival for Seenu’s affections pops up, in the shape of the curvy, lippy Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), and things get complicated.

That heroes will float around Bollywood colleges without hefting a single book is a very old story: nary a one is to be seen here, nor a classroom. That they will leap from one idiocy to another is equally old. There was a time when Dhawan’s brand of idiocy was sublime. The good Govinda fronted for him, David used his superlative editing skills to keep up a rat-a-tat-pace, and we all happily rolled down the aisles. But it’s been a while since Dhawan hit his stride.

‘Main Tera Hero’ is not as ghastly as a few recent Dhawans have been, but only because it takes itself not at all seriously, and becomes as silly as it should be for some of the second half . The rest of it has its share of the usual unsightly and tasteless gags about women and protruding body parts and the mandatory fat guy in a wheelchair.

“Purani haveli ke paas chikni chameli” is equal to “oh, this old guy with that babe”.  Clap, clap. Here’s another: “ek popat ki do maina” (one parrot, two `mainas’). And a whole series of lines about ‘bajaana’ : either you can tamp down all standards and go hyuk-hyuk at this sort of thing, or you can just sit there and wonder if anything can get worse.

Varun tries everything in his repertoire to be this hero: he fights, dances, and tries to be funny, topping it all up with a man-boob-mobile-nipple moment. But he is no light-on-his feet, beautifully-timed Govinda.  The effort shows. The flimsily-clad Ileana D’Cruz

Dad did ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ not because I am his daughter: Soundarya

 

Soundarya says that she felt blessed to work with her father, Rajinikanth in her debut film.

Filmmaker Soundarya, who is making her directorial debut with Rajnikanth-starrer ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ says her father agreed to be part of this mega project for the script and not because she was his daughter.

“Once he was convinced about the script and that it requires a certain kind of technology then only he said yes. Because the kind of action sequences you will see in ’Kochadaiiyaan’, it is not possible in live action or in visual effects to get this kind of impact.

“Only after he was convinced about this technology he agreed to do the film and not because I was his daughter. That did not even make a difference. I was confident of handling the project and my father said ok go ahead,” Soundarya said in an interview here.

The director says that she felt blessed to work with Rajinikanth, 63, in her debut film. Soundarya added that when the project happened he agreed to do the film not like a doting father but took a professional approach.

“This is a performance capture photo realistic film. It is a first attempt here (in India) but it is very famous abroad (Hollywood). Usually, films like this take approximately five to six years but we have been over ambitious and god has been kind and it took less than two years to make this film.

“It is a commercial film and the technology is new but the story is what a Rajinikanth story should be like. It is commercially packed film with technology that is used for the first time in our films,” Soundarya said.

She says it was not deliberate on her part to cast her father in her debut film. ”We started ‘Rana’ and my father unfortunately fell ill and then he got better. And when he came back (to do films) we did not want him to do undergo much physical strain because ‘Rana’ is a period film and ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ is a prequel to ‘Rana’.. Kochadaiiyaan is Rana’s father. We wrote the story as Rana’s story was already there. We wanted to make it less stressful for my father and decided to use this technology… it is easier compared to live action,” Soundarya said.

Although Soundarya focused on technology, she says she did not compromise on the script. ”I did not change the script. It was a new script. ’Rana’ was a live action script… we decided to do a film that was prequel to the script of ‘Rana’ and we wanted to do it in a technology-oriented manner. I don’t think my father will like compromise,” Soundarya said.

Musharraf shifted to his farmhouse

 

 

ISLAMABAD: Another symbolic light explosion occurred on the route of former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf when his motorcade was heading towards his Chak Shahzad farmhouse in the wee hours of Thursday, police sources said.
Pervez Musharraf has been shifted to his farmhouse in the federal capital from the military hospital where he was under treatment.But the question as to how the terrorist outfit was aware about the route and the time of shifting of the former president from the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) to his farmhouse and how easily the terrorists planted the explosive device on the route of the man facing open threats from the Taliban remained unanswered.

The former military ruler, who is on trial for treason, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt as a bomb blew up shortly before his convoy was due to pass from the Murree Road via crossing through the Faizabad flyover at about 2:00am, police said.

The bomb was planted on Musharraf’s route from the AFIC where he had been staying since January to his farmhouse in Chak Shahzad, the police maintained.No terrorist outfit has claimed responsibility so far, while nobody was injured in the explosion.

It was interesting to note that the venue of the explosion and the power of explosive was different when this correspondent inquired from different police officers.Half-a-kilogramme of explosive device was planted at about 300 metres from the Faizabad flyover to the Rawal Dam Chowk at the greenbelt, about 15 feet off the footpath, the AIG (Operations), Sultan Azam Temuri, said when contacted by this scribe for comments.

“It was an IED (improvised explosive device) attached with a nine volt battery; it was linked with a time device and operated manually and it was not a remote controlled device,” Temuri maintained.

The police said the former president was taken to his farmhouse at about 2:00am when the explosion occurred about 10 minutes before he was scheduled to pass through the location of the explosion, adding that he was later brought to the farmhouse via an alternative route. The bomb disposal squad had cleared the area after the blast.“Nobody was injured in the blast,” he said, adding Musharraf was the intended target. It was the fourth attempt on the ex-general’s life while three had occurred when he was in power.

Missing bureaucrat's son says his father perhaps kidnapped in KPK

PESHAWAR: Former Advisor federal ombudsman Amjad Shahid Afridi went missing, while his car was recovered from near Chach Toll Plaza on the Motorway here, Geo News reported on Friday.

Amjad Shahid Afridi’s services were handed over to the Khyber Pukhtunkhaw provincial government nearly a month ago and while he was awaiting for some important assignment to be entrusted to him here, he went missing since last two days.

The son of the missing bureaucrat, Wasim Khan Afridi told Geo News that no contact could be made with his father for the last two days and feared that he has been perhaps kidnapped. He said his father was staying in the Peshawar state guesthouse.

The initial report of his gone missing has been registered in police station (East).

Amjad Shahid Afridi had earlier held the posts of provincial education secretary, secretay higher education and secretary science information technology.

“But I feel unbelievably blessed to have this part. I never thought in a million years I’d get to play him seven times. Every day I walk on the set with the claws and the hair, I thank my lucky stars. I don’t take any of it for granted,” he said.
“I think that’s why I’m still here. I’m sure by the way, that it won’t always be my decision to always be here. At some point, someone will close the door on me,” he added.

The reports further suggest that Salman Khan will have five costume changes that have been designed by his sister Alvira Khan and Ashley Lobo.
Atul Agnihotri said, “It’s the title track that’s being picturised on Salman Khan, Pulkit Samrat and Bilal. We have got a mix group of dancers. While we have chosen one group from ‘India’s Got Talent’, the others are from abroad.”

Salman Khan ensured Iulia Vantur’s song seeks his approval

According to India Today Romanian model Iulia Vantur’s item number ‘Ummbakkum’ of the film ‘O Teri’ sought superstar Salman Khan’s approval before being released.

The news has already been making the rounds that Khan has helped launching his alleged girlfriend Vantur in Bollywood with his brother in law’s home production.

Now reports reveal the ‘Jai Ho’ star checked the final-cut of the song as he wanted to make sure it is up to the mark.

India Today quoted a source as saying, "Salman saw the final cut of the song before it was released. He looked into the edit and final presentation of the number too. He wanted to make sure it looks good."

"And for this song in particular, he wanted to make sure that it is not released without a go-ahead from him."

Confirming the news, India today quoted producer Atul Agnihotri as saying, "Yes, Salman watched the song before it went on air. He has actively been looking into all the details (of the film)."

‘O Teri’ is an upcoming comedy film which will feature Pulkit Samrat, Sarah-Jane Dias, Sara Loren, Bilal Amrohi and Mandira Bedi. It is slated to release on 7th march 2014.

Anil Kapoor ropes in Sonam Kapoor in his film

According to the Times of India Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor will star his daughter Sonam Kapoor as the leady lady in his forthcoming production.

The film will be based on Anuja Chauhan's novel ‘Battle For Bittora’, which tells a humorous love story of two politicians who contest against each other in the elections.

Anil expressed his excitement to work on the project, saying the novel is a perfect film material.

"The way I got excited for my '24' project (Indian adaptation of American TV series of like name), the same way I am very passionate and very excited about this film also," the Times of India quoted Anil as saying.

"I feel the content of the book will make a fantastic film."

Sonam has landed the lead role in her father’s production for the second time. Earlier she appeared opposite Abhay Deol in 2010’s ‘Aisha’.

Anil refused to divulge any details about her role saying, "It is too early to talk about it".
